| REVIEW: Akvis ArtWork 1.0 www.Akvis.com Screenshots and Examples: http://www.pbase.com/dannyraphael/akvisartwork The purpose of ArtWork 1.0 is to transform photos into “oil-paintings.” Version 2.0 was recently announced which has the ability to apply a “Comics” look. This review is based on version 1.0. ---------------------------------------------------------------- The Basics
Observations
In addition to items noted previously, in future versions I would like:
Oils 2 Oils 3 Watercolor 1 Watercolor 2 Watercolor 3
Bottom line
A big thanks to Kat at Akvis for the opportunity to review Akvis products. Note: I used ArtWork for the image attached below. ================================================================= To see more ArtWork creations, please visit this pBase gallery: http://www.pbase.com/dannyraphael/akvisartwork Last edited by DannyRaphael; 03-01-2009 at 10:16 PM. | Re: REVIEW: Akvis ArtWork 1.0 Danny, you sure found a lot more positive things to talk about with this program than I did. I felt like they had dropped a bare-bones beta on the market for us to play with and make suggestions on. Problem is, they charged full price for it. Now they are beginning to add a few needed things. If you care to share a few ideas or settings etc., that you have found to improve the final result, please do. Meantime, I'll keep an eye on it and hope it gets better. Not too impressed so far. Steve C. |

| Re: REVIEW: Akvis ArtWork 1.0 Danny, that's a very excellent and thorough review! The only thing I would ask for is the Hendrix image without Impressionist applied [done-djr] so we can see exactly what ArtWork is doing on its own, as well as the original unretouched version for comparison. Best I can do is post screenshots of the control values of my current collection of presets. I hope the quality is good enough to see the output differences in the preview windows. Last edited by DannyRaphael; 03-01-2009 at 11:25 AM. Reason: fix typo |

| Re: REVIEW: Akvis ArtWork 1.0 ... and the final six. Don't try to make sense if the names I assigned. ============================================== I got this question by e-mail: Q: "Why do you use a Photoshop action to make your ArtWork layers? Will you upload it so others can try it?" A: If you check the names I assigned to my presets, you will notice they are not very descriptive, for example "Ali 5" doesn't tell me (or anyone) anything about the output characteristics: Thick or thin paint? Long or short strokes? Detail or not? ..that sort of stuff. So rather than hunting through all my presets looking for the ones I wanted, I recorded an action to apply many of them, each to a separate copy of the background. Once the action was launched, I switch to something else like reading e-mail or surfing the RetouchPRO forums until the action finishes. Since the action only works with ArtWork 1.0, which ws recently replaced with 2.0, I'll send it to it to any 1.0 user who asks for it by e-mail (click my name above). This will avoid 2.0 users asking me why it doesn't work. Last edited by DannyRaphael; 02-28-2009 at 05:34 PM. |

I may wait a while and then give it a try again. Want to see if they make additions and/or improvements to the basic program. It may be that it does not really do anything essentially new or different from the software and plugins I already have. So I'll wait a while before deciding. Thanks again. Steve C. |

| Re: REVIEW: Akvis ArtWork 1.0 Thank you for your review, Danny! Very nice pictures, indeed! A question: Do we really need to simplify a layer before applying the plugin? Artwork has its own Simplification option. |

Thank you for your kind words. See the attachment below for a screengrab of the description of ArtWork's "Simplicity" function. Setting values for this control affect the character of the "stroke" applied. This is different from simplification. So, in my opinion the answer to your very good question, "Do we really need to simplify a layer before applying the plugin?" is: "It depends on the look you are going for and/or the characteristics of the target layer." In other words, "Experiment" and choose the outcome you prefer. |
