Thanks loads Danny! I just lost half a day looking at pictures and reading the explanations of same...

Space is an amazing place!

I wonder if there is a tutorial for putting together over 3,000 pictures taken over a weeks time period? (or maybe they just use a highly tweaked HDR Algorithm-- JK)

Anyway some beautiful pictures there... Thanks for the heads up!

Yes, those are wonderful images to get lost wandering through.

We have a group at Flickr who remix NASA public domain pictures. It's a lot of fun. My name over there is nancee_art

Re: NASA Astronomy Picture of the Day

one of the very nice things about these photos is, they're yours! well, yours if you are a U.S. citizen. taxdollars pay for all of NASA's work, ergo, it all belongs to us.

one of my favorites was taken a few years ago by Hubble. it was the deep space imagery project. they aimed hubble at a region of 'blank' space about the size if you held up a dime at arm's length, and did an exposure taken over about 30 days, each time hubble was in the right position. what they found in that photo of 'blank' space was astounding! it was estimated that in the dime-sized space there could be seen about 10,000 GALAXIES, not solar systems or stars, but whole galaxies! and, being that this was the deepest we'd ever looked into the universe before with any precision, and given that light takes a while to reach us from such vast distances, it was estimated that this was looking at that region of space back when the universe was VERY young. now THAT is some stellar photography!

you could download that image from the NASA site back then. it was 90 megs in size and this was back when broadband was still a dream in most folk's eyes. it took me quite a while to complete that download. when i loaded it up in paint shop pro and started zooming in, i was fascinated. you could clearly see all these galaxies. now, i dont know if there were 10,000 visible in that image. i kind of doubt it, but it was still one of the most amazing images i'd ever seen, particularly given the story behind taking it.

There are free software helpers to grab these wonderful images (I've linked to the Mac ones).

I like that one. Similar to horse head nebula.
And to think I was near sighted as a boy and had difficulty seeing stars at night.
What a wonderful universe we all live in!
