Using Manju's polar distort, I did a spatter and a palette knive and added lighting effects on one channel.

I went for the blurred out background look too.

I really like all the images here, especially Raniday's. It really conveys the intensity of the players.

My first thought also was to blur the background.

I played around, think I used radial blur and motion blur, then Picasso's Last Word, more blur, Rough Pastels . . . maybe even the kitchen sink! before getting something I liked. The only thing I missed was a good glass of wine, my doctor took that away from me.

Then I painted the figures back in with the history brush, touched up here and there, and there you have it.

Patricia, sorry about your wine; Manju did a hilarious post along those lines in the "Liz in Thought" thread!
I love your rendition, and I often toss in the kitchen sink before I'm through with a piece
Judy, I always look forward to your vibrant colors!! This one looks like pastel chalks and should be printed out about 36 inches high on canvas.

Here I isolated the players and added an adjustment layer for selective color.
I added two sets of Render->Lighting Effects.
Then, I added a mask to both lighting layers, lowered opacity and removed some of the light from the player in black (Tony Parker) because it was over-exposed.

I will get better at dictating what I have done with each pic......I promise.

Great Photo thanks! These are fantastic results
After a couple of weeks on holiday I'm a little rusty so chose this one to get back into the "feel" of things!

Duped bottom layer
L2 - Fotomatic/Techni-X filter - Dupe L2
L3 - Paint Engine/Poster effect - Soft Light
Impressionist/Chalk - Bright strokes on Black - Mode Normal 60%
Merged all layers.
PSP8 - Brush Preset/Coloured Noise - on bg only.

I had this photo on "hold" waiting for a good technique.

Used Trimoon's paper and AH brush, Stamp impressionist and a Photocopy overlay.

A very inventive combination of techniques from the lab of Dr. Rô. The way you handled the background sure makes those players stand out.
