Radial Mosaic

I've done my best to try to get Impressionist to do a radial mosaic, but to no avail. I did figure out how to coax GIMPressionist to do it (too bad I can't save the preset since it crashes PSPI Engine every time I try; bummer). Here's the full high quality version; attached a lower quality crop to keep Danny happy.

Edit:

I've been in a personal rut for a few days now; for some reason, I've got a boost and doing renderings and sharing ideas have been quite therapeutic for me. Anyway, I finally was able to save the GIMPressionist preset. Just unzip the preset and place in your GIMPressionist preset directory. And, also don't forget to make sure your grout layer is the base layer. Another trick (only for the GIMP enthusiast) is to run Inverse bumpmap on the grout layer after you run the plugin. This will raise the grout w.r.t. the tiles (just don't forget to add grain to the grout before any of the above steps). You may also need to adjust the size of the tile and the placement setting depending on the image rendered.

Pretty cool Java script for creating mosaics.

Apologies in advance for opening this ol' thread again, but I ran across this cool Java applet for creating mosaics. Now, I will conclude that I did add some bumpmapping and replaced the groute, so just keep that in mind. Also, I played around with the Edge mask option for this one. A higher quality result can be found by clicking here.

Very nice, Ikrol.

Is the applet downloadable, or do you have to use it from the web page?

Lyle and Craig, both of your mosaics are simply outstanding. I really like both of the effects.

Thanks for sharing. You've whetted my creative juices. Now I'm going to have to fire up Photoshop and play.

Janet

Re: Creative challenge 008: Mosaic effects

Thanks all; not sure if the applet can be saved locally or not Swampy, but I've no issue with using it as is. It does download locally (trust me, the file sizes that I've tried it on have been big, so it doesn't upload the file to the website; it definitely runs locally).

That's a cool effect Craig. I've not installed (did download it a few months back, but not installed). Not really been motivated with beta testing of late (that's why I'm still running 2.2x GIMP instead of the 2.3x versions despite the fantastic capabilities of the new version). I've been burnt a few years ago with beta software, so I wait til a full release (like IE7).

Re: Creative challenge 008: Mosaic effects

lk, thanks

i think you'd really like filter forge and i guess i've said that before to you. the current filter library now contains over 1400 filters (and growing) and it's not even been officially released yet. there are several mosaic types.

i had a look at the gimp again; at least the web pages. i looked at the 2.3 release notes. but, i couldnt find a binary for it. seems i'd have to compile it to run that version... for now, anyways. i think i've still got my old borland compiler around here somewhere, but not likely i'm going to install that either

but, it's been a while since i had the gimp on my machine and used it. i may have to look at it again. i noticed there are a LOT more plugins for it now than when i last ran it. it's really quite impressive how many folks have put so much work into a 'freebie'.

it also looked like 2.3 was not going to be released as a binary, but rather it seemed to be a lead-up to 2.4, which is going to be a binary. so, i may wait for that. either way, i think it's going to end up back on my machine

Re: Creative challenge 008: Mosaic effects

Used Photoshop Stained Glass, several Alien Skin filters and multiple layers with various blending mode to get this.

Hey Craig; just click here and you will be able to fine the binaries for Windows.

Here's the direct link (zip file). You still need to download the latest GTK+ files before installing GIMP.
