Nice, Nan. The painterly versions work well with this slightly blown out photo.

Patricia Kay

Blown Out referrs to white areas that have no pixel information because it's "off the chart". Over exposure of light areas. For example a light blue sky, that looks "white", but you know it had some color in it is said to be "blown out" and any existing color gets blown away.

Some of the highlight areas in the birds picture had very little color information in them to work with when setting a curve or level adjustment.

Thanks swampy and Patricia...
ahhh Costa del Sol, I love that area. Malaga has some outstanding wines, and Marbella is soooo beautiful. Can't wait to get back there. You are sooo lucky to live there, what a lifestye. Do you know this area from Costa Brava (pic attached, right above Blanes?

First: Levels and Hue Saturation applied to background to brighten it up and bring out some colors.

Then
* (bottom layer): Duplicate of improved Background + Impressionist plugin
* (top layer): Duplicate of improved Background + Photoshop Dry Brush selectively applied using a layer mask

This is a nice picture, and everyone is doing such a nice job with it.
I also Buzzed it and added some paper texture.
