first one the action straight, the second one using usm to get a sketchy feel

Alan | I then desaturated of course. That's what required both selective erasing and some smudging afterwards. Still have to do too much hand-retouching, but I can not get the look that I want otherwise. I won't give up in trying to get the computer to do all the work though. You all know that. |

Add a black to white gradient layer and adjust the white slider to produce the High Key effect.
Merge to a new layer, duplicate this layer, layer mode to colour dodge,invert and gaussian blur until a very very faint outline shows. On 300ppi image I used 4.5 pix.
Merge to new layer and run apply image in multiply mode until you get the desired result.
This can give a sketch with much finer lines.

Christine | That's cool Xaran. I also use my own method that I outlined here (you all know I like using filters). I usually use GIMP to do this (with Script-fus), but this time I did it Photoshop using Flaming Pear's Tachyon filter and layer properties. |
