Paint Engine Presets - installing, custom uploads (file)

INTRODUCTION
Paint Engine (commonly abbreviated “PE” ) is a plugin that is used to create "arty effects." Check out this thread for additional information:
http://www.retouchpro.com/forums/photo-based-art/2972-plugin-paint-engine-pc.html

PE comes with a configuraton file, fmachine.ini, that contains several dozen setting presets. One can add to, modify or delete these presets as you see fit.

CUSTOM PRESET SETTINGS
Linda Vich, who co-moderates the very fun and creative Yahoo Digital Nuts group (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/digitalnuts/) recently shared her stash of Paint Engine presets with me. After doing a little research among the photo-art forums, I realized most of the settings she sent had been posted previously among several PE threads by various RetouchPRO members.

The attached file represents a consolidation all of the RetouchPRO member contributed Paint Engine presets that I could find as of January, 2004. Thanks to members Vikki, Fluffbutt, Trimoon, Jim (QOM), OhThatGirl 2001 and Goldcoin for their contributions, as well as Linda.

Depending on your taste and needs, you’ll probably like some of these presets a lot while others won’t float your boat at all. Your mileage will vary.

ABOUT THE .INI FILE
* [PaintEngine:Settings] must be the first line in the file
* The .ini can contain up to 100 preset definitions, numbered 00-99. If more than 100 entries are in the file, 101 and beyond are ignored.
* If there are settings with duplicate numbers, e.g., two (or more) entries identified as Setting03, the first one in the file "will take" and the other(s) will be ignored.
* Settings are listed in the PE dropdown menu in alphabetic order according to the name assigned, regardless of the setting number or the position of the setting in the file. (Note: I precede the names of custom settings with a special character such as #, @ or ! to (a) distinguish them from the ones originally installed with PE and (b) to force them to be listed before the original PE settings.)
* The location of fmachine.ini will depend on your version of Windows. Could be C:\WINDOWS, C:\WIN or C:\WINNT or the like.

TO TRY THESE OUT
* Using Windows find files/folder function (via the Start menu), search for file name fmachine.ini
* When you locate it, RENAME fmachine.ini to fmachine-old.ini
* Save the attached file in the same folder, e.g., \WIN, \WINNT, etc. as fmachine.ini

The next time you invoke Paint Engine, it will use the fmachine.ini file just saved that contains the new preset definitions.

Try each and note the names of the settings you want to include with the original PE preset settings.

HOW TO COMBINE THE .INI FILES
* Rename fmachine.ini to fmachine-new settings.ini
* Rename fmachine-old.ini to fmachine.ini
* Make a copy of fmachine.ini. Name this copied file something like fmachine-backup.ini. This ensures that in case things go completely sideways, you can get back to where you were without having to reinstall Paint Engine.

* With your favorite word processing program
. Open fmachine.ini
. Open fmachine-new settings.ini
* Copy/paste settings of interest from the new settings file into the settings file.

Important: You will have to abide by the restrictions noted above, regarding setting number uniqueness, maximum number of settings, etc.

* When finished updating fmachine.ini, save it and open Paint Engine.

Have Fun!

Paint Engine preset

I know I'm replying to a really old message but I'm looking for the ice crystal preset for FM Paint Engine. It wasn't with the downloaded presets that came with the filter and I can't find it anywhere on the net. I was hoping you could help me. Thank you so much for your time.

I don't recall having ever seen that one in particular. By replying to this thread, you've caused it to bubble up to the top of the pile where it will get noticed. Let's hope your request will ring a bell with someone else.

Ice Crystals - I found it.

Source: http://www.haylerscreations.com/simp...etutorial.html

Here's the specific preset:

Setting85=IceCrystals;1,1,0,0,2,1,17,4294967189,26,0,104,154,108,54,6,1,17,17,4294967237,4294967241

You can copy/paste this preset into your FMachines.ini file.

Note: You may have to change "Setting 85" to something else if you already have a "Setting 85" entry. (The range of numbers you can use is 00-99. If 00-99 are already in use, you'll need to delete an entry to make use of IceCrystals.)

The entire collection is in the attached .zip. Note: The following presets are ones I've not seen before, so it will be fun to experiment.

Setting95=egg background;1,1,0,0,2,6,6,44,17,0,100,142,27,46,-7,-17,0,0,1,2

Setting96=beige bkgrnd;1,1,0,0,0,1,108,86,27,2,40,171,32,33,-5,-5,-52,0,27,131

Setting97=sheriffs badge;1,1,0,0,2,10,166,123,32,0,100,100,100,64,2,9,0,0,84,89

Setting98=flakes1;1,1,0,0,1,1,15,4294967134,23,0,100,127,107,11,6,-19,0,0,109,4294967295

Setting99=GoldenSparkle;1,1,0,0,1,7,118,89,39,0,139,121,110,67,-5,-9,1,-1,127,32

Thanks for asking, Betty!

Thank you so much for the preset. I'm glad I found you and this thread. Don't know how you did it but I do really appreciate it and all the information contained in this thread.

Thumbs down Thank you

When Paint Engine first was released there were presets everywhere. Some were fantastic, I recently lost everything on my PC due to a Power Supply failure. So when they reformated it, no more Ini for Paint Engine. I've been searching to find some of the ones I had for photos with no luck, till tonight now I have the Crystal one back with many I hadn't seen before...so thanks.

More Paint Engine presets from Fluffbutt

First the presets, none are used in the piccy tho.

Setting78=Damaged Paper;1,1,0,0,1,2,3,3,23,2,101,127,107,11,6,3,-1,0,3,3
Setting79=Oil Growth;1,1,0,0,2,5,36,84,18,2,101,154,39,97,6,10,-1,0,4294967294,4294967294
Setting80=Fuzzy Bear;1,1,0,0,0,8,175,32,4,2,91,340,87,69,29,-1,-1,-9,4294967275,89

Fuzzy Bear is great for making fur!

The piccy - I experimented with loading colour channels as a selection and running PE with a different preset on each channels selection (gauss blur about 4 - 10 strength before PE - smoothes off the sharp edges on some presets).

Then I loaded shadows as a selection, to catch the train engine, and did PE cottonball preset (mine, in previous post).

Finally, I bleached out the edges 'cos watercolourists don't paint right to the full paper size...

It's a stonger Effect in the big picture tho (original is 80 megs... shall I post it LOL)
<edit = typos!!>

<the Fluffbutt runs madly around the room, zonked out over catnip, tumbling over the mousie with joy>

<runs over to Danny and PURRRS around his ankle>

I'll describe some I remember:

The Wetness and wet..something ones are like an underwash.
Arctic oil is an oil type brush with icey spikes to it.
Cottonball is like scumbling with bunched balls of cotton - very nice on scenics

Fur and FluffItUp are an attempt to try getting a furry look to the edges of things.

the rest are guessable from their names. <I hope haha>

I just downloaded Paint Engine and used the new -or old- depending when the last update was and used the cotton balls and nothing else. I may go back and add more depth but I will have to see it printed.

Re: Paint Engine Presets (file)

Danny, Fluff, et al, this thread is a treasure trove of great presets. I am indebted to you and will post mine here if I come up with any worth sharing. Thank you.

Re: Paint Engine Presets (file)

Well, I for one am thrilled this popped up again. I have had so many different computer since I had this working properly that it reminded me how much I miss it.
I have it installed, followed all Dannys instructions and for the life of me can't get ANY of the presets to show up in the engine.

Danny, can you point me where to look for my error? I have a separate file of my plugins that PS goes to for them (like you taught me!) and the Paint Engine is there, it shows up in the list and opens in PS, but although I renamed the ini file and put the new file there, it doesn't show anything in the drop down menu.

Any help to solve the mystery will be happiness!

thanks..

Marilyn

* The location of fmachine.ini will depend on your version of Windows. Could be C:\WINDOWS, C:\WIN or C:\WINNT or the like.

It can be confusing.

Re: Paint Engine Presets (file)

I found the file...followed Dannys instructions to rename..etc...but the presets just won't show up. Someone else suggested I delete it all and start over?

Re: Paint Engine Presets (file)

Hi Marilyn:

Wonderful to have you pop in!

The PE plugin file can go in your personal plugins folder, e.g., \My plugins...

...but fmachine.ini MUST be named fmachine.ini and reside in the Windows folder that corresponds to your version of Windows.

See attachement for Windows 2000... XP is probably pretty close to this.

Keep us posted.

Paint Engine Watercolor Presets

Here's my current collection of PE settings that more-or-less render a watery look. Your mileage will vary. Some of these I created; others were posted by other folks.

IMPORTANT: Follow the instructions in the posts at the top of this thread for installation. Pay particular attention to the requirements that setting numbers must be 00-99 and that entries with duplicate setting values will be ignored.

Hi Bev...

Not to worry. Probably something minor. You know how fussy computers can be.

From the screenshot you posted it appears Fmachine.ini is in the right place, but I have Win2K, not XP, so I am not absolutely positive.

-----------

re: " ...i added the ini "
What do you mean by that? There should be no reason to modify the name of the file that came in the .zip.

-----------

Let's be sure PE is working with its native settings. If it does, that means the problem is elsewhere:
* Delete the file you renamed
* Drag/drop fmachine.ini from the original PE download .zip into \Windows
* Stop/restart your image editing program

Can you see the PE presets by clicking on the down-arrow above the button labeled 'Delete'?

-----------

If this works, drag/drop fmachine.ini from the RetouchPRO .zip into \Windows. ("OK" to the duplicate file message.)

Keep me posted.

~Danny~

Thanks for your kind words. I try to be as responsive as possible.

It's not clear from your reply if you can see PE's default presets after replacing the renamed file.

Can you see the preset lists in the PE menu?

No worries. Doing this type of debugging "by forum posts" isn't always the easiest thing to do, but we're making good progress. The end is in sight. (LOL)

re:fmachine-old.ini (on your desktop)
* rename
fmachine-old.ini (on your desktop)
to
fmachine.ini
* drag the newly renamed fmachine.ini from your desktop into \Windows, replacing the original fmachine.ini containing the default settings
* Stop/start Photoshop and you should be good to go.

---------------------------------

So what's up with fmachine-old.ini?

As time goes along, many people create their own PE presets which are saved in fmachine.ini. The purpose of renaming fmachine.ini to fmachine-old.ini is to preserve any custom presets that have been created. Since you have a "fresh" fmachine.ini, there's no need to "protect it" from being overwritten when you drag/drop the alternate fmachine.ini from RetouchPRO into \Windows

Make sense now?

----------------------------------

There is a Windows setting that "hides" the three character "extension" on some file names, e.g., .doc, .xls, .psd, .jpg, .ini, etc. So a file named fmachine.ini would be displayed by Windows as just fmachine.

With this setting in effect Windows would display fmachine.ini.ini as fmachine.ini, which probably helped make thing more confusing.

----------------------------------

re: Oh and while i have u is there a way to create a short cut to allow Painter 9 to access this filter.......

Sure:
* Right click on Pe.8bf
* Choose Create shortcut
* Drag Shortcut to Pe.8bf into your equivalent of

C:\Program Files\Corel\Corel Painter IX\Plugins

* Stop/start Painter. PE will be available to Painter under the Effects menu.

Are we having fun yet?

Re: Paint Engine Presets (file)

"Good morning, Bev," he said, reaching for his coffee.

re: drag the newly renamed fmachine.ini from your desktop into \Windows, replacing the original fmachine.ini containing the default settings

how am i replacing it if i drag the newly named one in ,i now have 2 in windows

Here's an important point. Two files with the exact same name are not permitted in the same folder. It's OK, however, if files with the same name reside in different folders.

If one attempts the above drag/drop, Windows will warn of this duplicate file name condition at which time one has the option of canceling the operation or continuing. Upon clicking OK, the previous file is replaced with the dropped one.

...and the default one is still the one that shows. should they both be showing in photoshop now..........

No. Per the above, there will only be one fmachine.ini in \Windows, the only place PE looks for it. One can have multiple fmachine.ini files scattered across multiple folders, but PE only cares (knows) about the one in \Windows.

After stopping/starting Photoshop, the "new" presets (the ones from the just dropped fmachine.ini file) will show up in PE's menu.

If one wants to make the default settings plus the custom ones available to PE, the settings have to be combined per the restrictions noted in the first post, i.e., numbered 00-99, no duplicate preset entries, into a single fmachine.ini file that resides in \Windows.

just to clarify when u say stop/start photoshop are u meaning open/close.

Correct.

Keep me posted on progress.

~Danny~
