Watercolour Expression - Red Rose

Hi all,

Have been messing around again with attempting to achieve a realistic WC painting via digital. Thought some of you might like to give it a go. :-) Have fun!

Cheers,
Sherry

Re: Watercolour Expression - Red Rose

Thanks for the pic sunfly. Here's my attempt in Painter watercolors. I've found in Painter the only way to get close is to work at very low opacities.

Had to try.
Couldn't beat Palms to it though.
Nice ones all.

Re: Watercolour Expression - Red Rose

Wonderful to see all the interpretations :-)

Alcor... wow! I love what you've done. It's almost exactly what I am struggling to achieve. I'm a healthy green... and curious.

Bill... very interesting use of white space blocks. It really adds a nice watercolour effect.

Palms... innovative and unique as always. And thank you kindly for your compliments... but the rose is a piece of Googled clip art. ;-)

Peter... what a great framing concept! I'm going to add it to my wall of sticky notes... err.. I mean my creative ideas library.

Have a creative day all ... and cheers!
Sherry

Re: Watercolour Expression - Red Rose

Been experimenting with a new idea anyway recently and this would make a good subject. I decided not to get the pencil outline this time, but a lot of wc's have this too. Anyway, I used AAA Color Blur filter to start things off (yes I'm a filter guy). I then used a crinkled paper fill (GIMP) and blended is in by setting the layer result to Value and lowering the opacity. I then used Xero's Supersmooth filter (with texture in this case) on the non fill layer and also copied this layer to the Top and did a large Gaussean Blur and lowered the Opacity of this layer to around 10. Flattened and played some with the Saturation. The biggest thing with any renderings with the backdrop. I really like the crinkled paper. Also, Supersmooth is one of the best filters (free too) that I've seen for many different applications. If I was in a CS2 mood, I would have used Paint Engine with @Wetter2 preset since it is an extremely powerful filter (but doesn't run in GIMP).

Nice work everyone! I really like the crinkled paper, too. Going to check out those filters.

Stephen, as usual you have set the mark. Excellent work. Perhaps this one might make a good tutorial.

Stephen... absolutely beautiful!!!!!! All the delicate fine qualities of a brushed watercolour. Yes... a tutorial would be fantastic.

A beautiful rose. Playing with a few of the many tools in the Alien Skin Effects Collection that I won in last month's RP contest. Fun stuff...
