Peter, this is a very emotional photo for me. I choose to make a statement here. Thank you for the opportunity.

Re: She must be shy??

The timing of Peter's photo post couldn't have been better for me. I just finished reading "Infidel" by Anna Hyrisi Ali and this photo just struck me as being indicative of her life long struggle to free herself and all Muslim women of the symbolic veil.

Re: She must be shy??

The thing is that many Muslim women claim to want the veil, so it is only an oppression when the wearing of it is not of their choice (as in some more fundamental Islamic societies).

When an MP over here made a statement recently, saying that wearing of the veil interfered with normal day to day communications, and fostered mistrust and suspicion, he was attacked vociferously, mostly by women.

In fact there was an upsurge in veil wearing, and Muslim women who had hitherto not worn veils now wore them as a form of protest.

I'm of the belief that if a woman wants to wear a veil as a sign of her faith she should do so, and similarly if she doesn't wish to wear one then that's her call as well.

Just so long as it's not forced upon her.

Love the picture though.

Re: She must be shy??

Gary, I agree that the wearing of the veil should be a woman's choice, but in the extremist Muslim culture it is but one symbol of how they view women. It is a benign symbol compared to the sexual mutilation, forced marriages, honor killings and the other horrific practices of a supposed "peaceful religion".

Re: She must be shy??

You won't get any arguments from me that some of these societies need dragging into the 21st century, just so long as it's done by education and not by imposing our views on them.

I am of course appalled by the practices you mention, and would like to see them terminated as soon as possible, but feel the situation can often be exacerbated by direct western intervention not improved by it.

Unfortunately, any permanent solution will have to come from within those societies as a result of a long slow education process.

Our own freedoms came mostly as a result of long patient struggle, and it is sadly likely that any changes there will be equally slow. Revolutions although quicker are undoubtedly bloodier.
