It occurs to me that another way to simplify (in lieu of Smart Blur) is to try Artistic > Cutout. Too many options, too little time!

Glad you have discovered this method and added it to your bag of tricks. I learned the basics of it from Mike Finn a couple years ago. There are several directions one can take it. Works great "on the right image."

Instead of smart blur I tried Buzz Simplifier. Liked smart blur better, but I think with a little experimentation Buzz might work too. For me the cutout left too many places where the edges were broken or the detail was missing.

Am sure I will end up trying this method in combination with other plugins and see what I come up with.
