contest at art museum

This looks like a fun contest and I love the impressionists. But I am baffled by the entry in third place called "The Cyclist Lunch". Is there something wrong with me that I don't see the greatness of this one?? It isn't a good representation of photography, photo retouching or photo art in my opinion. Take a look and let me have it if Im completely wrong??

Re: contest at art museum

Thanks for pointing this site out to me. Just entered myself (not shown yet, and when it does, not quite pointillistic enough, but oh well; lol).

My personal choice is "Rome - Sidewalk Restaurant Scene". Not taken by much that I see there. But, hey I haven't entered so I can't complain much right?

Re: contest at art museum

I liked "Rome street scene" well enough to give it 5 stars --I also like the current leader "Friends enjoy Autumn foliage".

lkroll---which one is yours --I want to have a looksee---
Renoir was not really one of the impressionist who did the pointillist style. I call them the dot dot guys. Monet and Pissarro were big on dots.

"Garden Talk" is one of the newer entries and I gave that one 5 stars too. The palette is very much like the Renoir that was intended to serve as inspiration "The Rowers Lunch"---

Re: contest at art museum

I still don't see mine. Wonder if I posted the wrong size (I sized mine as 800X600) or I did something else wrong (gave them my email adress and all and never got a response from them yet). Oh well.

By the way, I really like your interpretation.

Maybe it's not good enough for their review. Don't see a problem sharing it here (might need some pointers). It's a capture that I did a few years ago of my Brother, Sister-in-Law and nephew.

Re: contest at art museum

Very nice ---like and bright --lots of color like Renoir. I think you should try saving for web device. That's what I did and I don't think its too small. At least you can click on it and open a larger view of it.

I seriously doubt they rejected yours ----from the looks of the one in third place I don't think they are very discriminating at all. they might reject nudity or something offensive but if they took "The cyclist lunch" they'll take anything. Try uploading a smaller version.

Next month is Van Gogh. That should prove to be a challenge.

Yeah; I noticed. I've been emulating Van Gogh on and off for two years now, so hopefully I can do justice to that theme when it comes around.

Re: contest at art museum

ok, i dont quite get this contest. from the text description it would seem to mean submit your photos, unretouched, that remind us of some impressionist work, perhaps the one posted.

yet, at least one or two of the entries are clearly touched up to look more impressionist, like that park foilage one and doing well in the contest. since the voting is by 'the people', i can only guess that others were a bit confused like myself.

so, what's the deal?

Re: contest at art museum

That's probably why mine's been rejected Craig. lol

Wonder how a photo can represent a Van Gogh though.

Re: contest at art museum

i dont see why it would, lyle. there are others in there that have obviously been retouched. so, why would they reject yours? are you sure it was rejected? did you get something formal saying it was rejected?

and if i have read their page correctly, the idea is to duplicate in a photo some impressionist piece, like the one they posted. but, somehow that seems strange. why not just go out and pose a couple folks in an outdoor cafe and voila. so, again, i dont quite get it.

I tried to give you the max stars but the rollover didn't work and wouldn't record.. I refreshed, went forward then back and tried everything I know.. the rollovers worked fine for most of the other pics but there was at least one other that did not work.. I left a message stating "I wonder how many votes you have lost".. it looks like you were climbing fast.. nice rendition for the contest.. Good Luck!!

I tend to agree Craig.. a staged scene should be a winner!

I see no other way to interpret the following from their site:
"Let your camera be your paintbrush. Use the designated Impressionist painting as your inspiration and Submit your photographic take on what it would look like today. What are the equivalents to a Monet garden view, a Renoir scene of friends having lunch together, a Van Gogh still life, or a Caillebotte streetscape? Submit your Impressionist-inspired photograph for a chance to win unique Kimbell prizes.

Re: contest at art museum

Kraellin and Ol Baldy,
The contest explanation seems clear enough that they were looking for photos but so many of the entries were photo-art that I decided to go that route. The winning entry for Monet was an artistic rendition of a photo. I don't know how close to Van Gogh an unprocessed photo can get.
