Think you are on to something OB. Went a step further and ran GIMP's sparkle filter (lots of slider play) and then dup and ran GIMP's Erode filter (darkens) and blended it back with the non-Erode layer. Maybe still too many stars are showing, but I see a lot of potential with this scheme. Now why didn't I think about the dissolve trick?
