Water lilies

Thought I'd post a couple of lily pics. It was a beautiful summer in the lily pond and they're blooming longer than usual. A good sign I hope.

Light oil on dark canvas. Click here for the complete rendering; attached is a lower quality crop.

Re: Water lilies

I've been experimenting with inverting a black and white picture and then blending with luminosity. It worked pretty well on this picture but doesn't always.

Re: Water lilies

Beautiful work, wow….can‘t tell which one I like the best. I’m new to painting and I’m learning now how to do it.
I’m not new to Photoshop but I was mainly focused on restoration and it looks like I missed something.
Ikroll is your work done in Photoshop? If yes… please tell me what tools, technique did you use? I love this oil paint effect.
Thank you
Christine

This one was a GIMP/Irfanview collaboration Krystyna, but I think (I do have CS2 as well, but much better at GIMP) that you can substitute Anisotrophic for the GREYCstoration step. Also, since ImpressionFX is a PS filter, just place it in your plugins directory. Now for the steps. I first sharpen the image up (till it hurts). I then add some noise. I then run the result into GREYCstoration filter (a GIMP filter as mentioned earlier). I then sharpen it up just a bit. I then run ImpresionFX (still in Beta) with Paper preset (Irfanview for this since GIMP can't run this filter) for the oily gloss look. That's pretty much it. I did enhance the color some, but all that can easily be done in PS.

Arrgg; forgot to mention too that I blended in a canvas texture (easy to do in PS as well).

Re: Water lilies

Thank you Ikroll (Lyle) for your quick response and your detailed guidance. It looks like I have more to do than I thought. I’m wondering were I was, when all “this” was happening (I mean all the paintings…sigh). I will try as soon as I get more free time on my hand.
BTW it would be nice if everyone while presenting their art work would put some words, what tools and software where involved in producing their art
Palms, thank you for your warm welcome, I was about to write to you as well, your hummingbirds series are breathtaking. Is it all your work just AHB or something else you used along as well?
Thank you,
Christine

Re: Water lilies

Hey Christine (excuse me for overlooking your actual signature earlier),

I use to do this, but got lazy (lazy I am anyway; that's why I depend heavily of filters and layer properties; lol) over time and just present my results with just a blurb. Probably not the only one either. Anyway, if an effect catches your fancy, then if you ask, the originator will definitely outline their procedure. Also, forgot to welcome you to our forum too. Welcome and look forward to seeing your efforts here.

Re: Water lilies

Christine thank you, the hummingbirds are what is called smudge painted here is a link for you to read through
http://www.retouchpro.com/forums/pho...resources.html
sorry you may get a bit of brain drain from all the different techniques around but it is well worth sticking them out, then you can complain like the rest of us that there is not enough hours in a day ! ! ! ! and the ironing and washing piles up, the dust gets thicker etc etc

Steve flowers TWICE wow and well worth it the second one is a belter

lkroll i have said it before you are NOT lazy but inventive and clever

Re: Water lilies

Thanks Palms, but no defending my laziness. If only you can see how I retouch (lol). OK; I'll describe (partially). I first lean way back on my wobbly twist chair with one foot on my computer desk and do the overall effect. I then spend less then 5 minutes in a proper position to do fine detail work.

(and that's no lie).

Re: Water lilies

Thank you Lyle, I will ask for sure when any effect catches my eye, but at this moment I have to start somewhere. I went through Swampy’s tutorials and Palms’ tutorials and…I gathered some brushes and…started doing some work but I’m not happy with it so you might have to wait until I will feel comfortable to show something Palms I already went through the site you mentioned…and as you said my brain is drained. I need some time to put everything in order. It is going to take me a while. At the same time going through the art work I see here, I wish I can do my learning faster and as you said there is not enough hours in a day.
Amica999 your water lilies are smudge painted, right? Beautiful too….
Lyle both my names are fine, Krystyna is a Polish version from Christine and I was born in Poland.

Re: Water lilies

Thanks to all of you for your kind words and wonderful renditions. I am always amazed at how so many things can come out of one photo.
Each one is so different from the others. Steve, I love both of them and feel honored that you even framed the second one. Maybe Monet was a time traveler and actually did his work with a computer. (Maybe I listen to too much overnight radio.)
Lyle, you are a master at using filters and layers. Your work is always so unique.
Palms, are your light rays a plug-in or are they done with Photoshop?
Amica, to me it seems like a real fish in a make-believe world. Very different and unusual.
KTG-I have been reading somewhere that one of the main objectives in producing photo art should be that it not look as if it were made from a photo. You have done that very nicely, I think.
Olbaldy, I love the texture in your work.
Christine, I think you will find that everyone who responds to this forum is super. They not only do wonderful art work, but are kind and gracious to those of us who are just getting started. I have learned so much from the posts and have found that most people are willing to share techniques and links and give great advice.
Question for all of you-how do you keep track of what you do when you are working with a photo? I start out with good intentions of tracking what I do, then a little tweak here and a little tweak there and pretty soon I have no idea.
Shari

You are most kind Sharynideas.

Maybe Monet and Seurat both used computers. Never have figured out how Seurat had the patience to do all those little dots and come out with such great paintings.

As for remembering what you do to an image, Paint Shop Pro 9, which I use, has a history list of everything you do to an image. I just save that. Or you can also keep a written list as you go.
