Pileated Woodpecker

I found this guy tearing down a tree in the woods above my house yesterday. I think I got a good enough shot for you all to play with, even though it wouldn't make Audubon's calendar.

Re: Pileated Woodpecker

In our part of the U.S. these are getting more scarce. As a kid we saw them everywhere, but not so much anymore.

Re: Pileated Woodpecker

Steve-the frame is a nice touch. We have an old pine woods above us that is gradually giving way to hardwoods. Right now it's woodpecker heaven. When I was shooting this fellow, he was joined by a hairy woodpecker. I just hope they don't move into my house when they run out of food.

Olbaldy-I like the dimension on the tree. Looks as though Woody was carving.

Lyle-I like it, especially on the woodpecker tree. It really brings out the lights and shadows.

We have a lot of pine woods and wetlands near us here.

It's a real fight to keep these places natural. The state is buying up a lot of these areas and putting them on the perpetual preserve list.

When I was a kid you could walk in the woods around here for hours. Now there are streets and houses where we once played when we were young.
