Re: twilight.

Looks like a lot of 'Draganizing' is involved. That's a plugin that emulates the style of a photographer named Dragan.

http://andrzejdragan.com/

Download the plugin from here.

Draganizing tutorial here.

Have fun!

Re: twilight.

You can start out with light dirrection and creating the harsh shadow. On the right side of her face. Harsh under eye darkeness. And all the lips seem to be the same color.

Desaturate the face.

D&B

Faces look to have a bit of purple, so maybe some color overlays.

Re: twilight.

PWL, burned lips, selective desaturation blends, colored her coat with a blend of black. Few other things (nuances that are always required for retouching). Was going to do some cleanup, but the image was so small that I didn't want to loose any details (and my lazy self took over; lol).

Re: twilight.

Paint with Light. Chip has an easy action at Action Central that sets the layer properties for you, but it's not that hard to do. Just create two transparent layers and set them both to Overlay. Where you want the area of the photo to be brighter, you paint with a white brush, and darker, a black brush. I also sometime blur the result and play with Opacities (a cleaner result).

As far as calibration is concerned, you opened a big can of worms (lol). I do use an older CRT (calibrate it every two weeks), but it is 8 year old. Also, it is calibrated at 6500K (kelvin). If you are using the default 9300K setting (most CRTs default to this; not sure about LCDs since I refuse to use one), you will get a blueish tint. Still, I wish the powers at be would have addressed the calibration issue with some sort of automatic fix when they designed the OS in the first place, but, as such, everyone sees a slightly different result depending on the monitor of choice and how they calibrate. I still see the shadow areas as darker tone of the facial color. Only way to really be sure is use your color picker and see for yourself.

Re: twilight.

Ok, I could not resist, my daughter is a big, big, fanatic for Twilight. Not the best at all, but, it is good practice! She seemed to think that it was kinda cool.

Re: twilight.

Arggh; I see the blue now (have a 2209wa now; boy was my CRT bad; worse then I realized). Sorry about that. Might give it another try later now that my monitor is up to snuff.

edit:

OK; your original link no longer works, so had to work on my previous effort so maybe not as good as I would like, but had to get that blue out. Apologies for that result.
