It's like the old cliche........"How do you get to Carnegie Hall?" Answer: "Practice, practice, practice."
As for me it's trying new combinations of things, and keeping notes on what I come up with. Even if you don't get what you started out for, you may discover something new along the way.
One big problem...at least for me...is that a technique will look absolutely great on one image, and absolutely like garbage on another. By the same token, there are images I have tried to work with that nothing will make them look good as digital art, no matter what I do.
