every year we get a small flock of geese come in to the farm lake. at least one pair will nest and in a number of weeks we'll see four to six chicks being led around by mom and dad. for now, it's just adults. we used to have a pair that we could get close to, almost hand feed, but that pair is gone. the current dominant, nesting pair is a bit more skittish, so i had to not only use the optical zoom, but also the electronic.
this is the male. he often stands guard while the female is nesting or feeding. we put out a raft with a nest on it for her each year. we line it with pine needles and leaves and she seems to enjoy the security of nesting on the lake rather than the shore and also the lining. she's already been there cleaning and arranging, so it looks as if she'll be nesting there again this year
