Filter Forge and Painter 11 can work wonders. Painter even has a smaller version download demo's of each and try them out for yourself. Many of us here use both of these apps. and approve of them heartily.

So, you can try AKVIS ArtWork, it definitely does what you need.

Re: Best Software or Plug in for AUTO PAINTING

Expensive?
Alienskin SnapArt - $199
Akvis ArtWork Deluxe - $ 129 (Home verson $72)
ArtWork Deluxe offers these painting techniques: Oil Painting, Watercolor, Pastel, Comics art, Pen & Ink technique, and Linocut effect. http://akvis.com/en/artwork-tutorial/styles/index.php
Sure, it's a good price for these effects.
Anyway, I prefer their Artistic Bundle - Sketch, ArtWork, and ArtSuite at the discounted price.

What about Business Artistic Bundle?
"when is on sale" - we can't talk about this
Also, Lightroom does not creat such effects. If it could!

Re: Best Software or Plug in for AUTO PAINTING

Mentioned DAP already (earlier here that is) and it's improved significantly since I posted then; currently use the new 64-bit version that Oscar recently released (not a free upgrade though). Also, haven't seen it mentioned here yet, but PostworkShop is also quite powerful.

Red face Re: Best Software or Plug in for AUTO PAINTING

lkroll, thank you for the link! I tried this program, its effects look nice. But I had a problem with some images - the program did not open them (too large or what?). I use Win 7 now. May be it works better on Mac.

Re: Best Software or Plug in for AUTO PAINTING

The huge problem with DAP is that it takes for ever to produce a image :-(

postworkshop seams to be very nice i'll try it thanks

update on postworkshop : is not very accurate reproducing painting styles

I downloaded/tried Postworkshop twice (about 6 months apart, slightly different versions).

Looks like it has tremendous possibilities and unlimited flexibility, but on my system it ran exceptionally slow, even on modest sized images. Just not worth the wait between attempts.

So I uninstalled it - twice.

Re: Best Software or Plug in for AUTO PAINTING

It can be slow depending on the type of render you choose. Still, it has some unique abilities such as the Wall Street Journal like renders that I've done in the recent past. Like DAP, I don't consider PsW a do-all but a tool. I usually do a lot of pre-processing and post-processing in GIMP to achieve the result that makes me happy.

Re: Best Software or Plug in for AUTO PAINTING

Adding traditional artistic effects is one of my favorite post-processing techniques, along with heightened tones (faux HDR) and grunge textures.

PWSP gets a bit slow at rendering time when you have multiple effects in layers like I usually do. I used it for one of the images in my 2012 calendar (April). December's image shows some painting-like effects from Filter Forge.

See a list of these painting apps/plug-ins here (under "Natural media/paint").
