Adding Topaz to the workflow is a nice touch, it gives sort of cartoonish look.

How did you do that Palms?
I tried your sketch action, but it didn't come out like yours
I used the sketch action fading the diffuse to about 50% then added rough pastels fading to about 35%

i use the edit> fade function on this not reducing the layer opacity
then changed the hue to a brown ( i read somewhere that is a more pleasing colour to use, so thought i would give it a try )

you can get different results by substituting buzz, adjust or impressionist for rough pastels

Lyle i have seen a couple of your sketches of late (colour ones included) and they are great

Re: Nice sketch software

Thanks Palms. Like all edge detect sketch techniques, they don't do the darks well. I just dup, select the lights and make them transparent and process the result like I like and on the base layer, do the regular edge detect flavor of the day (Swampy's, or Gausean, or, ...) and run Impressionist Geo Chaotic Chrome for that layer. For the dark processing, I may use Impressionist GCC or might use GIMPression Graphite 2 to get the sketch effect for that. The blending then is left. Lots of words, but really, w.r.t. time, it's only a few minutes. Happy I am. Not sure why my brain didn't put 2 + 2 together before (I guess it's because I've always wished the computer to do all the work). Maybe someone can come up with either a cool action or Script-fu (for the GIMPers in the crowd) to at least do the separation phase if not the whole thing.

Here's another attempt using Filter Forge once again, as well as OnOne PhotoTools 2.0.
