Nice sketch software

I came across this interesting website that do instant sketches.

Does anyone know of the software or plugin that does this type of sketch?
Its probably worth adding to my software collection.

Re: Nice sketch software

Google photoshop tutorials sketch. I don't know of any software, but if you have Photoshop, GIMP, or another image editing program, there are many tutorials. I'm sure there are actions available, but you probably want to do it manually, so you can apply different settings, depending on the size and detail of your photo.

Re: Nice sketch software

Not sure about that type of sketch, many programs would do sketches (AKVIS, little ink sketcher, redfield sketcher, impressionist) to name a few apart from what could be done with a combination of standard photoshop filters. What exactly that cite is using is difficult to say, I would think it is something proprietary.

Re: Nice sketch software

What program do you use? Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, Gimp, Paint Shop Pro?
It's very easy to make your own sketch, no need to get an external program to do that. Just let us know what program you use and we'll very likely be able to help you out.

Re: Nice sketch software

What you can do after you're done with the sketch part, is duplicate the layer, select the smudge tool, change its blending mode to darken, and go over the portrait here and there to darken some spots. It makes a big difference. You can also change the blending mode of the smudge tool to lighten.

Re: Nice sketch software

Also, if you separate your darks for separate processing, you can do an edge detect and feed that input into Impressonist #pencil>geo chaotic chrome and do some blends to get reasonable results imo. Sample link below.

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/re...ssage=32093336 (I did add a canvas blend too. ).

Re: Nice sketch software

Thanks for the suggestions, they would make real improvements. I'll admit I was a little over energized, my first chance to submit an illustration as a newbier. I just worked it up on-the-fly. I'd also do another layer and make the tram's brush strokes shorter, narrower and directionally random, maybe add a slight blur to everything except the tram, reduce it all to backround, or add outline, as you suggest, before putting it through the wide brush layer. Lots of possibilities. It's definitely a down and dirty pix that could use thoughtful refinement. Good suggestions. Thanks

Re: Nice sketch software

Divide and conquer technique separating the darks for separate processing. Then fed result into impressionist and blended that result back in. Some smudge cleaning and texture added.

Re: Nice sketch software

Here's my effort.

1. Desaturate.
2. Dupe and change blend mode to screen.
3. Dupe until desired lightness is achieved (3 times). Then merge the dupes with the desaturated layer.
4. Dupe this layer.
5. Make selections around eyes, nostrils and lips with lasso tool. Feather 2 pixels.
6. Invert selection and apply Gaussian Blur set at 50. Set blend mode to Screen.
7. Dupe the layer below and put at the top of the stack.
8. Dupe this layer, invert. Then use Filter/Other/ Minimum and set to 1. (See Swampy's Line Art Tutorial.
8. Set the blend mode to screen and lower the opacity to 50%.

Re: Nice sketch software

Here are a couple more versions. On both I separated the highlights and darks on separate layers (per Lyle's suggestion) and did a little smudging to get rid of the pixelation. On one I just used a white background. On the other I used a copy of the original photo and lowered the opacity so it would blend in with the white background.

Re: Nice sketch software

Never got to that sketch thing, got sidetracked
No 1 many layers (impressionist, different outlines, textures)
No 2 Nicks old photo filter with color adjustment
No 3 standard highkey

Adding Topaz to the workflow is a nice touch, it gives sort of cartoonish look.

I used the sketch action fading the diffuse to about 50% then added rough pastels fading to about 35%

i use the edit> fade function on this not reducing the layer opacity
then changed the hue to a brown ( i read somewhere that is a more pleasing colour to use, so thought i would give it a try )

you can get different results by substituting buzz, adjust or impressionist for rough pastels

Lyle i have seen a couple of your sketches of late (colour ones included) and they are great

Re: Nice sketch software

Thanks Palms. Like all edge detect sketch techniques, they don't do the darks well. I just dup, select the lights and make them transparent and process the result like I like and on the base layer, do the regular edge detect flavor of the day (Swampy's, or Gausean, or, ...) and run Impressionist Geo Chaotic Chrome for that layer. For the dark processing, I may use Impressionist GCC or might use GIMPression Graphite 2 to get the sketch effect for that. The blending then is left. Lots of words, but really, w.r.t. time, it's only a few minutes. Happy I am. Not sure why my brain didn't put 2 + 2 together before (I guess it's because I've always wished the computer to do all the work). Maybe someone can come up with either a cool action or Script-fu (for the GIMPers in the crowd) to at least do the separation phase if not the whole thing.
