Found this ages ago at the Library of Congress site.
Mother of seven children. Age thirty-two and destitute, powerful picture.
We think we're hard done by today.

This isn't just some old photo you found. It's one of the best-known images of the 20th century - in this country, at least - taken by one of the giants of photography, Dorothea Lange for the depression-era Farm Security Administration. (Peter, you're excused for not recognizing it.)

If you're American and don't know this photograph, it's past your bedtime.

Like Peter i did not know the background of this photo
but i can see why it is a well known image

it is a very powerful and emotive image,and unbelievable how long ago this photograph was taken.

Unfortunately there are still photo opportunities like this today and that is very very sad ! ! ! ! !

The title of this picture is "Migrant Mother". Dorthea Lange did a whole series of pictures with this woman and her children as the subject. When Ms. Lange went back to find the woman again, she had moved on. As far as I know, they never made contact again. Wouldn't it have been a nice ending to the story to have one of her children recognize their mother or themselves and come forward after all the years and tell the rest of the story?

I colorized this one from the original large format sometime last year. Great photo of the stressful depression years.

The original had a thumb/finger in the lower right hand corner of photo which I took out. The tip of the finger extended up to the baby's eye.

I've seen this one before (many years ago). Definitely provokes deep feelings of sadness/despair. Let's just hope we don't see this again, but the way the economy (despite the heads saying it's getting better) is, may God help us.

Migrant Mother – Florence Thompson interview in the 80s before she died of cancer in 1983 (The end of the movie shows Florence and her three grown children together again)

As an aside... from Wikipedia.. Because Lange took the picture for the federal government she never directly received any royalties as the image was in the public domain, although the picture and the attention it received gave a big boost to Lange's career.

Excellent find OB; cool that most of her family survived even into the 80s and they had an opportunity for a reunion photo before she passed on.

I also followed the migrant worker trail during my youth and settled in Modesto, California until I joined the Military....

Been there, done that... will settle for the memories.. don't wanna see it happen again!

I live in Pennsylvania, USA, right next to New Jersey (where half of the Wall Street crowd lives). Just outside of Atlantic City, the big resort center, there are people living in camps in the woods. Having shot ads there for many years (for Fortune 500 companies), I can tell you that except for the financial ones, most have weeds growing in the parking lots now.

It's a fair cop for sure, thanks for the reminder, I should have named her.
I had a feeling this was a well known pic, at least felt it should have been, the quality shows.

Nice to get more info as well, just shows how a picture can start a debate, even an old one like this, shame there are parallels about today.

Steve - I'm impressed with your videos, especially the one pertaining to the depression. Being a guitarist which has an avid interest in finger style blues, I'm curious as to who the acoustic guitar player is on your "Great Depression" video. The music works well with the images of those hard times.

I am sorry to say I don't recall the guitar artist. I got it somewhere on the internet, and also thought it fit the images. Wish I could help more.

Powerful image, very moving thread. The renditions, history, the youtube video, all good. Thanks. For my go at this one, simplified, merged several outlines and the original, painted using Impressionist and made a duo-tone, black-blue/white.
