Digitalpainting.com forum? Hi everyone Is anyone here a member of Marilyn Sholin's digitalpainting forum? I really don't like the idea of subscription based discussion forums (whatever happened to free sharing of information on the internet like here on retouchpro?), but I really want to develop my skills as a digital painter (realistic portraits in oils/pastels specifically), so keep wondering if its worth it to join? Is there enough activity and active members (with pro-level experience) to make it worth joining? I hope its ok to post this here, but I would really appreciate some feedback before I waste $! Thanks Michelle

Re: Digitalpainting.com forum? Welcome to RetouchPro, Michelle. I believe I saw a thread on here discussing the membership, but can't find it now. Anyway enjoy your visits here and have a look in the photos based art section, there is a lot of information already. Some other member may jump in here and could asnwer your question. See you around...

Re: Digitalpainting.com forum? Sorry Michelle i cant help you about digitalpainting.com but would like to point out that some sites do charge a fee for the running of the site ( although there are those that do it for profit) but saying that there are plenty of tutorials around presuming that you are using painter here is a link for some tips etc by Fay Sirkus plus i expect there will be plenty of video's on you tube just try the search engine there And whichever way you go i find the best experience is practice Palms

Re: Digitalpainting.com forum? I agree with Danny. Marilyn's site is very good. I recently joined it and no regrets! The recommendation to search YouTube is also a good way to get familiar with a number of artists and techniques. I check artist's and their works. If I like them I check to see if they offer training. I bought DVD training from both Fay Sirkis (the above link is just one lesson in her DVD) and Maura Dupra. I highly recommend both. If you are just getting started with a photography background, I highly recommend Martin Addison's new book Painter 11 for Photographers. Last but not least check out Karen Sperling's website, www.artistrymag.com. Karen has written several of the initial user guides for Painter. She has a great newsletter with back copies available. You can peruse the topics of each newsletter and pick the ones that interest you. I did this and then met Karen for some one-on-one training and we covered everything that I needed in just 4 hours!!! I highly recommend that you check out her website - plus she is now starting to hold webinars. I hope this helps. Regards, Jon

Re: Digitalpainting.com forum? Thanks for the response guys, I have joined the forum and checking out the other resources as well. LOL it would be so easy to spend thousands on dvd's, books, magazines and lessons...but I think I need to just play and look around for a while and see what style I most like and then narrow down the choices for dvd's etc. Lucky there is so much available online, I havn't found anyone local (Western Australia) giving classes in digital painting. Of course, I have to overcome the temptation is to want to be able to do *everything*
