Smile How to add random brushstrokes/texture 2 painting

Just wondering if anyone knows of a good way to add realistic brushstrokes or texture to a painting after or during the painting process?

I use photoshop and sometimes use the canvas texture filter, but would like to start experimenting with more random and/or realistic brushstroke texture.

I feel this photo needs something as mentioned?

Thanks

Give Fotosketcher a try. It's free. I used the oil paint preset on yours.

See:

Artwork has been updated since this review (additional art style options, plus abiliy to share custom settings via Export/Import function), but the examples posted at pBase wil give you a general idea of the oil painting possibilities.

AKVIS offers a free, 10-day fully functional demo of this plugin. When you know you are going to have a few free days to experiment, I highly recommend you download/try it.

While you are at it, give Sketch a look, too. It is unsurpassed in my opinion.

Re: How to add random brushstrokes/texture 2 paint

Here's an example of Akvis Artwork applied to your original. I purposely used a "heavy handed" setting combination for illustration purposes. The effect can definitelty be "toned down" and/or selectively applied using layer masks in Photoshop.

Re: How to add random brushstrokes/texture 2 paint

Here's another approach achieved by applying the free Impressionist plugin (custom preset "#djrOils24" available here at RP) on a duplicate of the Background, lowering the opacity to suit (to about 50% in this example), merging layers and adding a little sharpening.

Danny, I really like the "heavy handed" look personally. Have to get that trial and have a go. This is one company that makes apps for both platforms.

thanks,

Did this in Filter Forge, with Smeary Oil Painting selected and manipulated the settings myself.

I did this one in Painter 11. It probably can be done in Paint Shop Pro as well, both being Corel products. One for the PC and one for the Mac.

Thats nice Gunner

I've got painter essentials 3, not sure if that will do the same thing, which part of painter did you use for that nice brushstroke effect? I'm still learning the corel applications.
Thanks

Re: How to add random brushstrokes/texture 2 paint

You need to go into the menu that has textures in it and apply them but be aware that in Painter 10/11 at least there is the capability of choosing 3-4 different ways of applying them. Also when you finish that go into focus and do the same thing. But be careful it is so easy to overdo it.

I don't have Essentials any more so I can't look into the menus to check out what I am saying.

Painter 3 has a few textures to choose from, but dosn't seem to have those nice swirly brushstrokes that you've got on your image. Oh well, it must be time to spend some money and upgrade lol

I downloaded Akvis Artwork for a trial run, and it gives nice brushstrokes like your example, but i find it a bit limited with the range of brushstroke styles.
It would be good if we could import a different brush just for something different. I know we can adjust the brush in Artwork but it always seems to have that "Akvis Artwork" look to it.
With Impressionist are we able to import our own brushes?

Re: How to add random brushstrokes/texture 2 paint

take a look at Artrage, Corel Photo Paint Essentials 4 and Filter Forge. for really deep paint i tend to look to Artrage first and their palette knife brush.

Re: How to add random brushstrokes/texture 2 paint

ok, i downloaded the free starter edition of artrage to this machine so i could show you some results.

the first one is straight art rage done is a fairly large brush so i could do this quickly. the brush is quite adjustable so you dont have to have it this rough looking.

the rest of these are a mix of your original image and the art rage image using different blend modes in paint shop pro to adjust the look and texture.

now, you've no doubt noticed that this is more than adding a texture. art rage is a painting program and not a filter program. so, you do have to paint to get your results and that may not be what you're looking for. nonetheless, here it is:

Yes. "Brushes" are shapes saved as .tif files. > 250 provided by default. Unlimited ability to create and add your own or ones crafted by others.

See attachment for small sample of the ones provided.

Re: How to add random brushstrokes/texture 2 paint

I was just wondering.
Is hand painting in PS or Painter an option?
This is more involved then using a filter but the end result would be much closer to the target ...random brush strokes.

Re: How to add random brushstrokes/texture 2 paint

I don't do hand painting but I KNOW that it can be done in Painter and i suspect i9t can be done in P.S. as well. It's just that P.S. won't automatically give you visible brush strokes, etc.

Re: How to add random brushstrokes/texture 2 paint

Apologies, I see that Painter did come up in the discussion.
Brush strokes in PS more difficult, but not impossible.
Attached image is more a proof of concept, but it is random strokes

Re: How to add random brushstrokes/texture 2 paint

I did this in Photoshop using large brushes and adding layer styles (bevel and emboss, drop shadows and strokes) to painted layers. I first simplified a copy of the background and saved as a Pattern and used the pattern stamp tool on several layers both with and without the PST's "Impressionist" feature ON and OFF.

Since Bevel & Emboss and Strokes or Drop Shadow effects are dependent on the paint stroke's edges you have to be careful not to cover edges with additional strokes. Add strokes to new layers so that you don't lose the layer effects.

Thanks Swampy, I really like this effect. Now you've given me some more work to study. Trying to learn things in PS that I have ignored is always helpful in the long run.nHappy Holidayz to you and everyone.
