while it is possible to print on glass, we never go direct to such a substrate as mistakes are very expensive and imagine trying to load a 48"x96" piece of 1/4" glass into the printer..we'll print to clear material and once color is approved it will be adhered to the glass panes

pixelzombie,

interesting. what type of printer are you using? and what are you printing to that you can then 'adhered to the glass panes'?

i wasnt thinking 4' x 8' sheets. i want something for the home. poster size would be sufficient. but for something like glass, even smaller would be good.

If you figure this out and actually try it, please post a really good photo so we can all see what it looks like. I never actually thought of doing something like this, but wouldn't it be cool?

I had my images printed for me, they used Hahnemühle watercolor paper (William Turner 310 gsm)

Many retailers also sell sample packs which is a great way to decide for yourself which paper you like best. Alternatively, visit a local fine art printer and ask if they have any off-cuts in some of the different papers.

ok, i'm going to give away a very secret, secret here... you can get newsprint, unprinted on, for nearly nothing. go to any newspaper that does its own printing and find the person somewhere in the purchasing office, that handles buying the newsprint. ask them if they have any 'ends'. ends are what's left when they decide they need to change the big rolls of newsprint before they run completely out. running out is a big no-no. you DON'T want that to happen in a large press and have to completely stop and feed in a new roll all the way through one of those things. so, when a roll gets almost empty, they change it out before that happens. they then sell those 'ends' for next to nothing to whomever will take them. i'm talking like $2 for YARDS of newsprint wide rolls. one of my sisters-in-law turned me onto these. she uses them for wrapping antiques. but, if you have a cutter, they can make pretty nice inkjet printer art paper. others may like them for caligraphy or watercolors or whatever. it's a great deal, so, sssshhhh! dont tell anyone

Yes, it's very cheap, but completely lacking any archival quality. Have you noticed how quickly a newspaper turns yellow if you leave it exposed to light? In my opinion, If you want something to be displayed and that will last a lifetime, it is worth paying for quality paper and using archival pigments.
