Boneappetit - I also thought it was a 3d program at first, but there are camera specs on the right, and the comments below talk about photography, so I thing it was done with a camera.

Something like this was done for a Canon ad. They stretched a balloon over a speaker and dropped paint blobs on. Different sounds played throught the speaker causing the balloon to vibrate which bounced the drops of paint. High or Low frequency sound caused the paint to react in different ways
