Photo collage experiment

I'm writing another tutorial for Photoshop Projects magazine and decided to do one on multiple-image collaging. Not that I do this often, but every time I see one of these online or in a bookstore, etc., I get inspired.

I started off with several random images (an archway hallway, a fancy stone wall, a statue, trees, a sunset) and got discouraged immediately...

After randomly choosing one image as a background and experimenting with PostworkShop, Topaz plug-ins, onOne plug-ins and some native Photoshop effects (layers, blending modes, motion blur, opacity), I got this!! A total of 10 layers that can be massaged independently for different results. I'm not discouraged anymore ;-).

I'll also use this in my next ezine for the lead tutorial.

Looks nice Plugs. Not sure if you are aware of Media Chance's Photo Blend or not. I did do some play during the beta, but creating the montages are not my thing.

Nice work, Mike. I've been at http://www.pbase.com/creativematrix for several years and you'll find that the people there do something very much like your example. The originator of the group, Skydancer, called them Lightweaves. Check through the archives and you'll find lots of good work. The membership includes all levels of ability up to expert.

Thanks Veralisa! Yes, there is much good work there, thanks for the heads-up.

I know my work here is by no means unique; I've seen and appreciated this sort of thing for a long time but never did much about it.

As I write I'm tweaking this collage further, lots of fun.

Re: Photo collage experiment

I kept tweaking it... My daughter begged me to stop but I had more photos and plug-ins! I think this is a bit better though.

Re: Photo collage experiment

Wait, I had to flip the cracked paint effect (from Retrographer).

Re: Photo collage experiment

Thanks! And it never ends, so many possibilities await you in the same set of layers (in this final arrangement, 12).

Another funny thing, the base image I began with and built upon is no longer part of the work.
