I'm experimenting with textures, can't find the texture brush????
Where is it? Have both 6 & 7Ps.... What are presets? Can one reset tools on 7?

Goldcoin, you made Hope sparkle! I like the simple lines too.

In PS7 the texture brush is found in the edit menu, where you can choose to FILL a selection -or- make a brush from the pattern/texture instead. Presets are included with PS. To access them turn the triangle in the upper right corner of the tool windows. You can add your own (brushes, etc.) to the lists also as you make new ones you like.

This is where my wanderings took me. Or maybe I should say, this is where Reindeer Games' Adapt.Equalize filter sent me. I ran this filter as the first step, and it changed the look of the model so much I became intrigued. But it also created lots of very extreme noise. So the rest of the process was trying figure out how to cover up the noise.

If you run that filter on the orginal you will see what I mean.

I'M BREAKING MY OWN SELF-IMPOSED GUIDELINE
As a general rule I don't use "non-Photoshop" applications or plugins to generate example images. This time I'm setting that guideline aside.

WHAT'S UP?
Ran out of hard drive space, so while I was in "delete mode," I ran across a program I hadn't touched in nearly three years:
Microsoft PhotoDraw 2000 v2.

Back then I had no idea the number of built-in effects (and options within each effect) this application has.

Fired it up and WOW! It's positively amazing what this program can do artistic filter-wise. For the "brush stroke challenged" like yours truly, this is a dream come true.

(If you've ever heard of the Microsoft Impressionist .8bf plugin that was floating around on the net a few years ago, PD2K has that functionality built-in - and is much easier to use.)

HOW THIS IMAGE WAS GENERATED
I used two PD2K filter effects on Hope that I thought looked arty, saving each and subsqeuently opening them Photoshop. I did some selective blending using layer masks. Finally I generated a Find Edges layer from the original image and applied that with layer blend mode Overlay to bring back some edge detail.

BOTTOM LINE
It takes a lot to impress me these days when it comes to "arty" effects. PD2K lit me up like a big time firecracker. Really.

If you've got PhotoDraw 2000 sitting around doing nothing, you might want to take another look.

I found this image tonight, and when I started playing, I couldn't decide what I liked best. So I hope you will be patient with me, as I have 5 different versions to show you.

I started by playing with the layers, with a negative/dodge layer, and merging those and then playing with the blend modes over the basic image. Then I also added color layer and played with its blend modes. Once I got the basic color images, I then applied different filters.

This was one of the first, and I just liked the simplicity of it, so I only used a simple texture over it.

This time, I used the difference blend mode, and liked the uniqueness of it. So I applied the mosaic glass, but with the settings gentle enough that it didn't distort things too much.

When I tried blue as the overly, it changed the tone of the image so much that I added the tear. The blinds seemed the most appropriate filter for this one.

With this one, the blend mode is saturation. It looked a bit harsh, so I softened it a bit with edge preserving smooth.

I liked the way the colors effected the image so much that I decided not to use any filter over it.

This one is without any color overlay, and with very little color showing thru. So I used the change to target/color to add a bit of color to her lips and eyes, and then softened it considerably.

I want to show the work - simulating a color pencil. It is all it is made in Adobe PhotoShop 7.

You're right about PhotoDraw 2000 not being produced anymore (it may have been superceded by Picture It! or the like) and I should have mentioned that.

PD2K is readily available through "used" channels such as eBay, however. A legit copy sold for $30 recently.

RE: MSFT impressionist plugin
I've read this was originally part of an early MSFT product (perhaps MS Publisher v1.0?). Since it was an .8bf, it could be (and frequently was) ported to other applications that supported plugins. It used to be available on various sites for not completely aboveboard downloads, but sources seem to have dried up. If you run across it, check it out.

Tyeise, you acheived a nice simple outline. I like all your varieties but prefer the "touch of color" one, I think.

Alex, nice work with PS7 on your colored pencil version. Just one suggestion: You might want to erase the double nose line.

You guys inspired me to take another look at Hope. Here's a new color sketch.

Alexdem, your color pencil version looks like an artist's rendering. It's hard to believe it came from a photograph. Very nice work.

Danny, thanks for the compliments. It's easy to make PSP 8 do wonderful stuff. Part of why I enjoy it so much.

Phyllis, I appreciate how you always have something nice and helpful to say to everyone. And I always look forward to seeing your many different versions of images around here. You are part of what makes this place special. (Touch of color is my personal favorite as well. )

Several layers - from bottom up...smart blur, blend mode to multiply. Curves, blend mode to Luminosity. Underpainting, blend mode to Darken. Flattened, did an auto Curves (wow - what a change that was!) and a final levels adjust.

First of all - my apologies to everyone who posted on this thread - I really haven't had the opportunity to look at all the pics (this darn work keeps getting in the way of my fun!). Here is my rendition - done in stone. I really did not get as much detail in the hair as I hoped (working in granite is tough!)
