Eye drawing tutorials...

Looking for tutorials on drawing the eye - Specifically the female eye. Here's my (weak) first attempt. I know I have a ways to go but here goes...

Can you give me a better hint?

I tried searching for eyeball and got nothing. The forum search would not let me search for eye or "eye tutorial"

Eyeball Action from Adobe Studio Exchange:

Quote:
Description: This set contains two actions. The first action renders a realistic, yet somewhat cartoonish eyeball, while the second action turns the eyeball sideways. As with the older action, you get to change the Iris color!

Grin...

And here is the link to DJ's action. It was located in the Restoration, Retouching and Manipulation Forum in the Action, Brushes, Swatches, Styles, Textures Thread. The link takes you to the thread, but you will have to scroll down to get to DJ's post.

Sorry. I haven't tried the action yet. You may be able to tweak the problem and record the fix if you can figure out the incompatibility. I'll try to take a look at it later and see if I have the same problem.

I would suggest studying some traditional art books. I dont know if they are still published but Andrew Loomis wrote excellent books on drawing the face and the human form.

It's really developing nicely! Now you just need to add a bit of shading to make it look more realistic and give the image more depth.

I see you flipped the eyes because the highlights are flipped and give a crosseyed look. There are some specific proportions that apply to any human face with small deviations of course. One thing the human face is never completely symetrical. another is the mouth generally ends at point straight down from either eye. There are a lot more proportional things you learn in art school and books and observation. It all takes time, keep on pluggin"

Are you trying to achieve a realistic or a stylistic look?

Thanks for the links. Only the last one works though...

Fort his image I was trying for a stylized look. When I get an eye that works, I'll probably flip it (adjusting the catchlights per your recommendation) and file the image somewhere. It's something I've had in my mind for sometime. I had wanted to get a girl to pose for me with very light makeup and dark lipstick and eye shadow and I was planning on flat-lighting it and slightly overexposing but this is the kind of thing I had in mind...(Except for the part where I can't draw! )

I appreciate your comments!

Jaz

Not sure if you are going for realistic or not, but here is a good site with numerous sketching tips:

YIKES! That's a pretty short tutorial for something so well done. I love how the artist rendered the man's face but really!?!...Shouldn't he have included some step-by-step details?

Thanks. Still not enough steps and details.

The thing that's so hard about doing (long) women's lashes is simulating the curve and depth. It's very difficult to achieve that when drawing. I notice most artists choose instead to abstract women's lashes and just create the feeling of depth and curve. That's what I'd like to learn! :-)

You did see my latest cartoon eyes?

I think they are getting (slightly) better though the last one'e iris is too perfect...

Pam - Those are wonderful. I had seen them both before but they are definitely worth saving! :-)

Unfortunately, as good as those tutorials are, they provide no detail on creating lashes... Oh well. I guess I really need some lessons!
