| Ah, yes. Very nice, Pam.
In addition to Ripple, I've had varying degrees of success with giving a little character to "edge only" layers with Ocean Ripple, Spatter, Sprayed Strokes and Phyllis's favorite, Stylize > Diffuse > Anisotropic (usually backed off a little with a FADE command right after).
Another way to break up the lines is to load the selection (via the channels palette using any of the color channels) of the edges only layer, go back to the layers palette and apply a whole bunch of "noise" to the edges only layer via Noise > Add Noise, or grain or film grain filters.
While I'm rambling, once you breakup the lines via Ripple, Spatter, whatever, apply Emboss and change the blend to Overlay or Hard light against the original BG; this gives kind of a textured effect to image edges that can look pretty neat.
Ain't all this flexiblity and experimenting fun!
