Photoshop Filters: Books and websites

Filters, filters, filters...

It's fair to say that the more you get into the native Photoshop (or Elements) filter set, the more tools at your disposal as you create photo-art.

So where do you find out more about Photoshop's filters?

Here are a few books I've found and a website worthy of note. Overall, however, I'm afraid the news is so-so at best.

Bottom line:
Lots of experimenting and surfing the web will most likely be your greatest sources of knowledge in this area.

On the PS filter book front there's good news and bad news...

The good news:
* There are a few books available

* They were written for PS3, PS4, PS5 = they're cheap (on the used market)

* Adobe has kept the PS filter set pretty much the same PS3 through PS7 (Liquify was added; a few other minor tweaks), so PS filter content-wise these books are 95% applicable, even with PS6, PS7.

The bad news:
* With the exception of the first book listed, none of these provides cover-to-cover, in depth coverage of the PS filter set. Each presents various techniques using some filters (more depth on some than others), but depth and overal coverage is limited.

* With the exception of the first book, the others suppliment their relatively skimpy coverage of specific filters with additonal information about 3rd party plugin filters, many of which are now extinct.

* The first book listed, which is clearly the best of the bunch and is strickly devoted to the PS filter set, was only made available as part of a five book set; it was never sold individually. (It shows up occasionally on eBay, where I bought my copy.)

The list:
* The Complete Guide to Photoshop Native Filters (ISBN: 1-56830-453-6), which was part of the Photoshop Magic Premier Collection (1-56830-442-0)

* Outrageous Macintosh Filters (1-55828-429-X) Mac filters = Windows filters

* Photoshop Filter Finesse (0-679-75324-9)

* Photoshop 5 Filters F/X (1-57610-300-5) I believe there's a PS6 version of this one. Content is probably very similar.

* Adobe Photoshop 3 Filters and Effects (1-56205448-1)

Here's the only site I've found that illustrates most filters, but there's not much depth on each:

Thumbs down

Quite frankly Danny I've found more usable filters and actions on the RetouchPro forum than I have any where else.
