Of late I have been messing with converting color images to grayscale and thought this one had possibilities. I applied Levels and a Channel Mixer adjustment layer set to monochrome to get this effect.

So this is my first crack at these forum thingies, not sure of rules of engagement, if explainations are required, so I'll be brief if you'll be kind.

I pumped up the colour using the channel mixer, blending in overlay or multiply modes, not sure which now, reduced opacity slightly. Then did a little diffuse glow with gaussian blurs and such like. I was planning to leave it there but it started to remind me of the paintings my mother did when I was a child, so I used Dave's Simplifier Action, and played around with the blend modes in the luminosity layer and the simplifier layer, to just give it the feeling of a painting.

Very simple (hence my post subject line name). I use Autotrace with the following script: AUTOTRACE -corner-threshold 75 -despeckle-level 16 -despeckle-tightness 1 -output-format ai -output-file c:\temp\d.ai -report-progress %1

I use Mayuradraw to convert the vector to bitmap

Then, in GIMP, I use a Warp Sharp Script-fu to fuse the acrylic pieces a little closer, and then I run bumpmap to give some dimensionality to them.

Finally, I select the white area and to an invert selection and then run Xach Effect Drop Shadow Script-fu deleting the light layer. I adjust the shadow layer to taste and flatten. All of 2 minutes actual work (maybe a little longer, but this method's become quite rote to me).

not really sure i can explain this technique. it begins by messing up the image quite a lot and then slowly bringing it back with various tools like airbrush, push, clone and some others. there's a high pass sharpen in there somewhere, some very low density smudging and some very high. lots of different size brushes. it's sort of a huge, gross smudge that's brought back to a finer one.
