I thought this picture taken by Doug Kay would lend itself to one of the moody effects I've seen applied to images. Looks like Humphey Bogart should be entering stage right.

I really like how this free Mike Finn action (Watercolor) worked on this one. It's available here: http://homepages.slingshot.co.nz/~mikefinn/action.html

Copied the original BG to the top of the layer stack, Layer > Add Layer Maek > Hide all and airbrushed white to restore a touch of detal around the people on the platform and to tone down the lamp glare.

Finished up by adding Hue/Sat and Levels adjustment layers to the top of the layer stack to fine tune the effect.

* Paint Shop Pro Edge preserving smooth (30)

* Remove one distracting white spot (select & median filter)
* buZZ simplifier 1

I was trying to not use any plugins, but buZZ really added something.

I love seeing Bogie next to the train, Platscha!

I went for a darker, moodier look. First I adjusted the levels, then added a little grain. I dodged the figures to make them brighter, and added a little mist with the Xero filter. I added a black solid color adjustment layer, then painted to reveal only part of the image. A setting worthy of Bogart, I hope!

I was experimenting with "channel swapping," the interchange of channels using the Channels palette menu commands Split Channels and Merge Channels. The results are usually very colorful and most unpredictable.

It's kind of like applying the Stylize > Solarize filter, but with more control and options.

This one is a combination of two channel swap results merged onto individual layers. The layers were blended using a Black-to-white gradient on the top layer's Layer Mask and setting this layer's blend mode to Linear Burn to give it some more funkiness.

I usually have a hard time with dark photos, but the wonderful interpretations posted so far tempted me to try again.

This is a mix of lucis art and nik's midnight filter topped with several different pattern fill layers in soft light blending mode.

Cheryl, I've never heard of those filters. Pray tell, where does one find them. The result is very interesting.
