Creative interpretations: Paris by the Seine

My daughter told me recently that for her 21st birthday, she's going to take me to Paris. In the mean time I'll have to settle for lovely pictures like this taken by Maxine.

I haven't quite got what I'm trying for--yet. But this is close.

Convert to CMYK mode. Duplicate black channel. Convert back to RGB. Load black channel as a selection. Run Impressionist (something with low distortion) follwed by paint engine (to soften). Deselect. Note: you have to delete the black channel to save as a jpg when done.

I didn't do it here, but after saving for the web, created a new layer, filled with brown and ran texturizer. Erased at 50% opacity with a grunge brush (large size). Set to color dodge--it adds a little something.

Second image: Got the look I wanted :-)

duplicate original, run buzz gloss stack (remove around 100 rest around 4)
duplicate buzz layer, increase brightness and contrast.
on top layer, select black, select inverse. Fill with brown, paint with art history brush. Vary modes and type. Deselect. Set blend mode to multiply.

Steve: beautiful work (as always). I like the warmth and vibrancy you've added.

Some fabulous stuff here folks! Steve, I really like yours. Paris really is the city of "light". Kiska, yours is totally different but awesome. Great photography breaks down to: Know your subject; Focus attention; Simplify. In your work you've accomplished this.
I've taken a pen and ink approach.
Sketcher
Simplifier
Duochrome
Select water and levels to darken

Cheers
Duv

Thanks, Duv, for the kind words. I like the clean simplicity of your sketch. If you were to get one 'painting' software, what would it be? Anybody??
