Until I started working with this image, I didn't realize how lousy it was quality-wise. Sorry about that. After 3-4 false starts and starting over I settled on this one. This is pretty "out there" for usually conservative me.

About 90% of this was created by an action I wrote, then shelved, then tried again tonight. The action requires the new Virtual Painter 4 plugin which not many people have yet. E-mail me if you'd like a copy of it.

Amy, keep the 'different' stuff coming. It helps me feel not 'quite so out there'.

Decided to try out some new Painter techniques I just learned....

1. Ran the image through NeatImage to reduce artifacts
2. Light retouching in PhotoShop
3. Opened in Painter and created painterly effect working with grainy water and artist pastel chalk.

First off, thanks! The painter program is Corel's Painter 8. For more visit their website. Actually this image was done with Painter 7. The program is up to version 8. I've upgraded to it, but haven't started learning it yet.

Also if you own a Wacom, many times they have discounts. For instance if you own an Intuos2 Wacom tablet, right now you can purchase Painter 8 for $129. For more on this click here.

Wink

Ahh thankyou for that. I have basically most of the other programs but not CorelDraw.

Oh well, I will just have to keep going with what I have already.

Judi:

I'm adding a technical note so others who might be reading this thread don't get confused:
* Corel Painter is not the the same thing as CorelDraw. They are two different programs.
* CorelDraw Suite (like Microsoft Office) consists of a number of programs, including CorelDraw, Photo-Paint and others. Photo-paint is conceptually similar to Photoshop. Draw is in the same ballpark as Adobe Illustrator. Painter is not part of the CorelDraw Suite.

T:

Late to the party, but let me add my Two thumbs Up! on your interpretation. Very nicely done.

While you're waiting to apply 8.0, download the 8.1 upgrade from Corel.com. Apply the 8.0 and IMMEDIATELY (w/o opening 8.0) apply the upgrade. If you open Painter 8, you will need to uninstall it, reinstall it and then apply 8.1. It's silly, but that's how Corel did it.

Here is one more...

I took my first image back into PhotoShop and used the smudge brush and a regular brush to create the hair as well as add a few more highlights and shadows on the clothes.

Have fun with the download Judi! It's a great program and with version 8 they made the interface more like PhotoShop. You will most likely want to have a tablet to take full advantage of the program though.

Decided to try my hand at this one with Painter. Made a background in Photoshop, render clouds then several Impressionist filters. Opened in Painter, and used the original image as the clone source. Painted clothes first, then hair, then her face and hands, each time using different brushes. Then took the image back into Photoshop, tweaked a bit, and added texture.

This is only the third or fourth image I've done in Painter, any suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks T Paul

I have now started looking at tablets. I have found many brands and have found another thread about tablet prices and have asked if there is any comparitable brand to Wacom. I do like the Wacom but wonder if there are any of the others just as good.

There are several threads on tablets on this site, so be sure to use the search engine and check them out.

Here are two to start with:

Here's my creation. Used an outline tutorial by Jay Arraich initially. Very interesting. Made a few changes like using the emboss filter at maxm, find edges, diffuse anisotropic.

"T",

Nice work on both of your works.

Your work is what I'm striving to learn, can you recommend some tutorials to get me started?

Question Here's my first try.

Great image to work with! I kept it simple, just got rid of the distracting background and applied a sepia tone to the image, plus added some enhancements to the total image. Thanks for looking.

Welcome, Art_uro (clever login name):

You did just fine (upload-wise). What I can see of what you did, yours is a good one. We just have to work on the sizing.

File size must be less than 100 KB.

Keep resolution to around 72 - 80 ppi.

Height / width will depend on the image.

If you are using Photoshop, the File > Save for Web command is the easiest one to use and allows you to save larger images than just File > Save. You can use the Quality slider to adjust final file size. Approx 10" x 12" at 72-80 ppi and low Quality seems to work if you use Save for Web. (Low quality is OK for monitor viewing.)

If you are not using Photoshop (and that's perfectly OK), what program are you using? Perhaps one of the other members can give you specific assistance.

Not to worry... we'll get you going soon.

~Danny~

Thanks!

Thanks Danny,

From posting the thumbnail and just clicking on it, I was able to figure out how it works. I'm amazed at some of the work that is displayed in this thread, I'm glad I found this site and will participate.

Thanks again.

Why thanks! My technique is modified from a tutorial by Helen Yancy. Corel's Painter web site has a portion of the tutorial.

a) Glad to help
b) Glad (too) you found us

I agree. Many exceptionally talented folks have contributed here and an even bigger bonus: They're very helpful and supportive.

Having been around a couple years I've seen rookies really blossom just by jumping in and trying again and again, as well as those with experience find new tools in their bags of tricks. It's almost like Christmas everyday!

Look forward to seeing more of your creativity.

More of Trimoon's history technique... with a small change. Try using a clean sketch over the first layer (bg), find your best mode. Then use any brush in the art history setting..now that's the snag, finding the right brush. Keep your brush very small and high opacity.
Work with the blending modes to find the best. then...

Throw in a layer made with Impressionist (Danny's oil) is great!!! Work with them, trying out different texture and modes.

Have only done this twice. Cindy was the first.. Was much happier with this one of Cindy

Will do it again and try to keep some intelligent notes.
