Creative interpretations: Sailboats in Harbor 2

Back in junior college I took a 3-credit class in "Introduction to Sailing," where we sailed on the Columbia River near Portland, Oregon. That experience sure made me appreciate "real sailors" who navigated the high seas long before radar, diesel motors and global positioning satellites (GPS).

Ahoy!

My good friend, Harry Ellerton pointed me to this tutorial...

http://www.spoono.com/photoshop/tuto...rial.php?id=61

...which yields a sketch effect similar to what you get with Photoshop's Find Edges filter, but you have more control over the outcome. I used it for the basis for my interpretation.

When finished with the tutorial, I turned off the top layer (blend mode=Color) and applied Photoshop's Watercolor and Median filters to the layer below it to soften the colors. Hue/Saturation and Curves adjustment layers were added to fine tune the colors and contrast.

Jaykita, I usually really like what you do to create art works from the photos here. Your techniques are an inspiration. This one of the boats is exceptional. The colors are rich and bold. The scene has been turned from blah to striking. WTG!

Danny - Cool effect.
Jaykita - Very darmatic use of colors.

1 - levels to brighten
2 - add moon
3 - digital velvia (very high)
4 - paint engine : curve brush
6 - photoshop : watercolor filter
7 - digital velvia (medium)

Not sure I like the moon or not, just thought I would try it.

Hello, Pat:

I'm delighted you joined us. I like your sense of creativity. You'll fit right in!

I saw a "digital velvia" plugin the other day. Is that what you used or an action?

Hope to see more of your works in the future. It's always fun to get some new ideas.

Digital Velvia

Danny -

I picked that action up at Fred Miranda's web site a year or two ago at

http://www.fredmiranda.com

I just looked and he has a new plugin called velvia vision I think. I might take a look at picking it up. I use his digital velvia action on almost all of my photos.

My web site is at

http://www.scenic-impressions.com

Do you have web site or gallery somewhere? I am just starting trying out the photo art stuff, its a lot of fun. You guys do amazing work.

Appreciate the Velvia and Fred Miranda info, Pat.

Yeah, this photo-art can be a lot of fun -- and no messy cleanup afterwards! It allows me to engage artistic ambitions in spite of my absense of drawing / painting skills!

The results of the majority of the tinkering I do are posted as attachments throughout this forum, but I do have a few items in a pBase gallery: http://www.pbase.com/dannyraphael

Here are some other galleries of folks who do some pretty amazing photo-art work. Many techniques, many styles, varied subjects -- something for everyone:

http://www.pbase.com/pstewart/photo_art
http://www.pbase.com/digitalnuts/this_weeks_nutcracker
http://www.pbase.com/manjulasiriwardena

If you think you're inspired now, after you see some of these you'll really be fired up!

Awesome post Danny. Looking at all that exceptional work is very inspiring. Everything I viewed (including and especially yours) makes me want to get the job I'm working on finished sooner and return to playing around.

Thanks so much for the much needed shot of enthusiasm.

Re: Creative interpretations: Sailboats in Harbor 2

Another nice one.
I must be in a nautical mood today.

Duped, smart blur, then overlaid an outline, twiddled with the colours then added a texture.
