Creative Interpretations - Contemplation

Here's another picture from my New Year Scottish holiday. It is of me sitting on a rock trying to look suitably contemplative (ie: vacant ).

Here's a sketch effect using just the Photocopy filter in Photoshop, then I reduced the picture size to 800px before running the Chalk and Charcoal filter.

Hi,
I cropped the photo of this handsome gent; then here's roughly what followed:
Xero filters Improver
Virtual Painter
PS Cross hatch
moved some colors around using eyedropper & paint brush
smudge tool for artifacts that appeared in the background
Sharon's mat action

Mal - I've visited your site and must say, you have a good eye for capturing well composed photographs.

Cropped image.
Blended one of Mal's other recently submitted pictures as a bg (seems appropriate).
Knocked out subject.
Color balance on bg as well as subject.
Simplified BG as well as image with different settings.
Contrast adj.
Sketchmaster was used to achieve frame edge.
enhance foliage.
Several hue & sat adj.
Added sandstone texture.

Good image.

I replace the background with a yellow sky using KPT6 Sky Effects
Then used Poster Edges, Paint Engine, and Smart Blur.

Cheers!

Nice to meet you Mal...

Well i did mine in photoshop i first cloned our dear Mal Firth and then i turned a picture of a fisherman on a loch into a wild painting adding Mal Firth signature letting the audience believe that our Mal is looking at his painting, thus adding a frame to it as it makes a believable (please pretend) outlook on Mals love of life and paintings...

*Grins*

Had fun doing this picture...Now its 9pm and i got to go supermarket...

Wonderful pic, Mal... Nice to see you "up close."

I thought this one was an ideal BW candidate. I used the "Quick Yellow-Green" (filter) effect that's described among Glenn Mitchell's great tutorials and action downloads here:

Navigate to BW Conversions.

And a sketch version...

I was inspired by the results Mal got from Photoshop's Chalk and Charcoal effect, so that's where I started.

I used layer masks to combine the results of various sketch / chalk / charcoal-type filters and plugins. See the layers palette snapshot for which filters were used on each layer.

I love sketches and Danny's and Mal's are both great!
I used the emboss filter first, then aniso, then a modified lighting effects filter, hardlight blend. Merge, channel mixer, mono.

that's right mal, nothing like a good cup of coffee when all around is cold

nothing exciting or new; see the layers palette... the "glowing edges" layer was created from the "virtualPhotographer" layer...

Axel,

Thanks for the compliments!

I use PSP7 as my main imaging program. Along with that, I have about a ton of plugins.

First, I erased the background leaving it transparent. I then saved a selection of the opaque parts of the layer for later.

I created the sky background on a new layer using KPT6 "Sky Effects". I am not sure if you can buy this anymore from corel. This, however, is the same plugin as Rayflect "four seasons" which can be found on the internet. I set the sky color to yellow, and placed the sun in the right spot for the lighting, and made clouds to taste.

Next, I flattened the image and applied Adobe's "Poster Edges" (available with Adobe PhotoDeluxe).

For the next step, I wanted to add some texture to the sky. I selected the sky (by inverting the saved selection from earlier). I applied Fantastic Machines "Paint Engine" plugin using the "bad brush" preset. Twice. (Paint Engine available free from here: http://www.fantasticmachines.com/html/paint_engine.htm)

The final step was to remove some more detail, so I used Adobe's "smart blur". PSP's "Edge preserving smooth" would've worked, too.

Hope this helps.

Cheers!
Jeff

I also like sketches

I especially liked Danny's rendition!
After looking at his again, I almost decided not to post mine, but what the hey.

I copied the Green channel and pasted it on top of the BG.
Increased the canvas size a bit.
converted to LAB.
Loaded and saved the "lightness" channel as a selection.
Converted to RGB.
With the "Lightness" channel loaded as a selection, ran Impressionist: Pencil Sketch: Detailed Monochome.
Inverted the selection and Ran PSP:Stylizeiffuse - Lighten.
Made an elliptical selection and roughed it up with the lasso tool.
Inverted and feathered said selection.
Created a layer mask.
Created a white-filled layer below the masked layer.
stamped visible and ran PSP:Texture: Texturizer - Sandstone, 135, 5, Bottom Left.
Faded to Darken and lowered opacity.

This is such a great photo. The lighting is great, the pose is great, and Mal, you are great to share it with us. Thank you. And thanks to everyone who posted before me for sharing your artwork. I'm so impressed and humbled. Good job to all.

I used Byro's pencil sketch action and modified it some. Then I added a gradient to make it look like a blue sky but started playing around with blending modes and came up with this pinkish-grey background that I liked a whole lot better. And of course, I added the original back in at the very top and blended it with color mode and opacity settings.

Have fun all.

Janet

Great Sketch effects everyone!

2 questions:

1. what does the red type signify?

2. what is "Byro's pencil sketch action"

Extra credit question - Where can I get a talent implant?

1. re: Red type significance
* If you've done a search, search arguments "found" will show up in red.
* Colored type can be used for emphasis, to draw attention.

Am I close or way off base?

2. ByRo's action: Click HERE.

3. re: Talent transplant/implant.
You don't need one. Really.

"Speed bonnie boat, over the sea to Skye....!"

Following others and their sensible idea to fill in the bg, I scanned a photo
Of the Isle of Skye and filled in the bg of Mal’s photo.

PAINTER 8
New layer, filled with white, used Transparency Button.
Acrylics/Wet Soft Acrylic 20 – Default
Used a circular motion on clouds first.
Cloners/Soft Cloner to reveal the blue sky.
(Otherwise did not paint the blue sky at all)
Acrylics/Wet Acrylic 20
Stroked all over fields and hills following the contours.
This left all of this very streaky.
Acrylics/Thick Opaque 10
Went over Hat and Jacket
Lowered Opacity and stroked face etc.
Cloners/Soft Cloner
Brought out face details and homes in the hills bg.
Cloners/Oil Blenders 20
My first try using these – went all over the streaky parts
Of fields and hills, also jacket.
Cloners/Soft Cloner – went all over jacket bringing
Back some detail.

I did the Hills, Fields Sky on one layer.
Separate layer for Mal and his clothing.

I duplicated both these layers to saturate the colours.
Multiply mode only on BG hills and sky only.

Dropped all layers.
Added a canvas texture in PSP8.1

Thoroughly enjoyed this, took about an hour or so. I've submitted a thumbnail of the image with its new bg prior to painting it.
