Another try at working towards an old world look. When/If I ever get it completely figured out, I'll post some real how tos. In the meantime, I'm certainly enjoying the process.

Janet

P.S. Danny, this is the FIRST one I did in Painter.

Janet, thats a lovely rendition you have there, amazing stuff !!

May i ask you a question ? When you say OLD WORLD, can you explain exactley what you envision ? I have an idea myself but would like you to clarify...it has me intrigued.

Janet, I like your rendition here even better for an "old world" look. Maybe it's the old world subject?

Neve, a great image to work with. Thanks. (Sort of... I was gonna go to bed, but I saw this and had to have a go at it.) Created a new backdrop in Elements2 then Painter8 SmearyBristle Cloner. I left the painting a bit rough and actually roughened it a bit more with the Blenders>GrainyBlender.

Marvellous result Janet for your first go in Painter! Can't wait to see what you come up with next...

Well done also Mark (who should be snoring by now?). I thought this image would be a good one with the definition in colour and character evident in her face.

Janet and Mark, these are wonderful.
Axle, I want to thank you for posting the Painter tutorial. It's so detailed and clear. Painter 7 (which I understand isn't the best) has been sitting on my hard drive for 2 years, thought I couldn't live without it, and I've hardly opened it, but your tutorial might just get me going!

Talk about a lifetime of toil! I wish I could see her hands. Dodged her creases. Selected her face and parchment and old film plugins. Inverted and ran MF Watercolor and MF pOpArTiSt actions. Lightened her eyes.
She may have been a beauty when she was young, but she had to do what she had to do.

Cheers
Dave

Outstanding results folks

Legacy and Axle - folks have been trying for ages to copy this talented guy's style...
http://andrzejdragan.com/

There's a Photoshop Action (perhaps more) here that you can try on your images. (Just noticed CREX had already posted this link also.... )

http://www.atncentral.com/download.htm

I've been keen to give it a go myself but haven't found the time yet....

Painter 8

Impasto/Round Camel Hair on Woollen cap
(Gray and Purple parts)
Impasto/Wet Bristle on Yellow and Red Scarfs
Blender/Detail Blender 5 (Hat, Scarves)
Blender/Just Add Water on everything except
Face which wasn’t done at that point.
Blender/Smear – Jacket Only
Cloner/Soft Cloner to bring back some detail
On hats, scarves, jackets and edging.

The hard part (for moi) came next…the face.
Started with Cloner/Wet Oils Cloner 10
Blender/Detail ? 5

Did not like result at all. Tried to fix with

Oils/Round Camelhair then
Acrylics/Wet Soft Acrylic 10

Opened in PSP8.1 and used darken tool
To emphasis wrinkles more.

Here's my first crack at using Painter 8. Background in PS Textures: Burlap plus Aged Film plugin. Not sure what I'm doing yet. Too much? Not enough? Comments welcome. Thanks Axle for the Toot!

Cheers

Thanks Janet! If I get enough positive feedback maybe I can talk my wife into letting me get a Wacom. Now wouldn't that be sweet!

Terrific efforts Duv and JC. I found this really very difficult but you both pulled this off so very well.

The Wacom tablet is certainly worth it not only from an artistic standpoint but from an osteo standpoint. I have severe arthritis in my neck and shoulders, which affected my arm when I used a mouse. I justified the wacom on health principles alone and have NEVER regretted it. What is the $300 when compared to surgery?

Good painting, Duv

Dave,

Your Painter version turned out great. But I'm with Janet... You really should get a tablet if you can. I think the WetOils10 cloner is pretty forgiving, even when used with a mouse (making it a great beginner brush - its the first one I had really good success with). But many of the tools, at least in my clumsy hands, simply aren't functional without having the pressure sensitive control. I use the smallet, bottom of the line Wacom - Graphire3 4x5. It should be easily available for less than $100US. Possibly you can get a used one for far less. Maybe you can sweeten the deal for your wife by promising her a nice Painter portrait or 10.

Thanks Mark! That's encouraging. I thought I was going to need the Big Daddy and for that I would have had to do a LOT more than a Painter portrait!

Cheers

Did a little Draganizing on the old gal, then took her into Gertrudis Pro, then back to PSCS2 to add a little outlining, some curves and a touch of hue/sat.

High contrast aged photo on cloth.

Retinex, desaturated, Flaming Pear's Mr. Contrast and some adjustments. Flattened. Then duplicated and ran Xero's ArtiFax filter on the base layer and then adjusted the opacity on top layer to taste.

Second one is a smudge/Impressionist combo and also using Xero's ArtiFax filter for the canvas texture.
