Thank you C.J., Raniday!

I wish i had a formula to give. I just desaturated the image, and played about with adjustment levels in ps7. Saved it. In corel painter8, cloned the image, selected clone source, and worked on a blank sheet, used a digital watercolor - fine tip brush (with the clone color button depressed on the color palette) Got in as much detail as i could. Darker areas reproduce as black with this brush (with a b&w image), and diff opacities and sizes give varied results. Large sizes give a smudgy look. So you've got to watch it. I used the eraser- tapered bleach 30 for unwanted parts. Then i took it into ps7, and used the default paintbrush (reduced opacity and flow) to add strokes to the image. Various sizes and opacities. I added strokes to the hair, face and also created the logo on his suit which the cloning didnt catch. Hope this helps.

Thanks, Jaykita! I've printed them out and will give it a go. It's just such an original effect you've created.
