I've been wondering is there is an easy way.

Collage: how to blend pasted object seamlessly

Once I've made a selection, and copy/paste to a new background, there's a harsh transition line between the background and a new object (feathering for selection is set to 0). If I set feathering to a higher value, a few (quire a few sometimes) bits of color are taken along for a ride. So, what I usually do is set feathering to 0, copy/paste and then use blur tool to blur the border...very long and tedious work...

Could anyone suggest a better way.

Try pasting in your object with no feathering. Then immediately go to the layer Menu and select Matting > and try Defringing by 1-3 pixels or Remove Black Matte or Remove White Matte. Depending on the image you are pasting in, one of these should work.
From there if you still need a smoother blend you should be able to feather the pasted object or invert the selection and feather the background. There should be no need to hand blur the pasted object's edges.

Filter / Blur / GLausian Blur (About 1 or 2 px)

Whenever I need a precision I use Corel Knockout2, with very nice results.

Is Corel KO 2 easy to use? Can you save the knocked out selection as a .psd for use in other programmes, such as PhotoImpact, that uses .psd formats as well?

You can use it as a plugin inside Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro.

Hi,

I had been trying to learn how to do collages for quite some time now and I did not know that this little option "Matting" could help on the creation of them. This could have same me some time!

You do learn something new every day!

Is there any other way to use the "Matting" option on the layer menu besides this?

Does anyone know for sure what exactly "Defringe" does to the pixels of the new layer being posted? ... just curious about it

I don't know if I am answering my own question not but I was practicing with it and I noticed that "Defringe" actually expands the color or the pixels of the background around the edges of the new image being posted... and it does so by the radio of pixels you put in... is this true? Once the color of the pixels are expanded onto the new image does the color stay the same as you move the image over the background or does it update them accordingly?

Now, does anyone know if the "Remove Black/White matte" work on "predetermined" number of pixels around the image being posted? I tried leaving a border of white around the image to see if it would remove the color white but it didn't. It seems that the "Remove Matte" only work on a few pixels... is this correct?

Again, it is just experimentation of a good feature.

I didn't know this little trick before either. It has just been proven that yo ucan teach an old dog new tricks (I'm an OLD dog). My question is, besides Remove Black/White Matte, can I do a Remove Foreground/Background (color) Matte. This would be neat for bright colored backgrounds.

I thing "Remove Matte" works within the feathered area. If you use a higher feather setting you will get a wider white/black area.

Defringe (a quote) " replace the different fringe pixels with pixels of a similar
hue, saturation or brightness found within the selection area. ..If a noticeable fringe still persists it is possible to contract the selection prior to moving it using the Modify > Contract option from the Select menu."

That's what I do

I do preaty much the same... only differenc is that I dont use blur method, but
select/feather and put a amount of 2-3 pixels (less or more depends of the resolution of the pic)

That's a brilliant sample, but is it easy to use? Currenty I use masking or lasso which is time consuming. Is it quicker with KO 2?

Yes. Here is the selection I made. It is outside & inside of an object’s edge. The rest is taken care by the software.

Whoa, that looks good! I ordered one on eBay and will check it out when it arrives. I so hope it's easier to use that all my tight detail work!

HI... for quick cutouts KO2 is Ok... BUt i dont recomend it.... BEcause if you have a complicated background, KO 2 will make many mistakes, which you'll have to repair again and again... Still it's great for qick cutouts if you have a simple background and you aren't so much in masking...

Looking forward to hear your oppinion on KO2 when you got it...
