Re: Water Dress (AMAZING work!) - Possibly NSFW - parcial nudity

Channel Chops is a great book. Clutching my autographed copy very tightly.
I actually wanted to write a follow up to that book about 7 years ago but my publisher said there wasn't any market for it. Even talked to Katrin about it before her masking book came out. She thought it was about time a masking book came out again but we never got around to heavy duty calculations work. Maybe my publisher will listen now? Who knows. Market dictates.

Re: Water Dress (AMAZING work!) - Possibly NSFW - parcial nudity

those calculations worked nicely chris, thanks for that. Would like to experiment with it a little more next week when i have time.

i've never used the offset and scale portion before though, i will have to do some reading on this...I would like to be able to use calculations with more of a knowing on what moves to make before hand, ratehr than experimenting, would save a bit of time.

Pretty much any kind of color cast, tonal corrections can be done with calculations as well as masking. Adding detail from one channel to another, completely rebuilding a channel from two other ones, or three other ones can be done. Making black and white images. Sepia tones.

There really isn't a book out there for this. THe Photoshop Bible I think touches upon it slightly. It has been awhile since I have read it.
Chops is a older book that goes into calculations blending, but it does it more from a special effects approach than from an image approach. But you can get an idea of how it works. Search around the internet for Kais tips. He goes into it pretty well also.

I believe that katrins masking might also have some calculations work in it, at least for blending channels not sure.

If you do a search for my name and PEI on the internet you might find a article about automatic masking that I wrote for them. That was at least 7 years ago so it might not be around still. But calculations hasn't changed. Ever. Sadly.

Chris,

For the directionally challenged (such as myself), can you explain the water extraction process a little more clearer. I printed your directions and followed them until I got to the bottom of the Calculations dialog box where it says Results. It gives you three choices: New Document, New Channel, Selection. What do I do here?

Bella

You can do whichever one you like.
I prefer the new channel option so that i can modify it if needed.
The New document is ok if you are going to save it with some other masks for later use.
I rarely if ever use selection. Its to easy to accidently deselect and not notice until its to late.

So save as New Channel and load the channel as a selection etc.

Re: Water Dress (AMAZING work!) - Possibly NSFW - parcial nudity

Hi Chris (and others)
I am finding this thread very interesting, especially the indepth discussion about calculations. I use calculations regularly to create masks 9either for image extraction or partial transparency), but have never tried the offset and scale options. Chris, how did you decide on your calculations for these images? (was it just by trial and error, looking for contrast etc, as I do, or is there a set of mathematical principles at work?)
also, I tried your calculations on JCB's splash image, but got a very weird looking mask - must be doing something wrong. I didn't know what was required with apply image to clean up the mask (have only used this for slight colour adjustments on composite RGB channels, not on alpha channels)
help?
I recently posted a query re a book purchase I hope to make this month - Katrin Eismann's "Photoshop Masking and compositing" or her "Photoshop Restoration and retouching"? I can only buy one at this point. I love compositing but probably need more input re retouching at this stage. Which one, which one?

Yes, Thanks for your information. :P

He's a photographer.

I couldn't either, but, I read around the internet that was Paulo's team who did the job.

I wish I could tell you. Years ago I could have when I was doing it on a daily basis. Now it is purely instinct and I'm surprised I am pulling any of it off at all.
I initially do go by contrast, looking at each channel. But other things come to play also. Like the amount of color in an area, density, luminosity, hue, saturation. And Color theory plays a lot in it, like what color will cancel another out etc.
If you are looking for a book on retouching as you stated in your other post, then stick with the restoration and retouching book. It does have a good deal of retouching stuff in the back end that you can learn and branch out from. Since you have been doing a lot of compositing, then you can hold off on the masking book till you think it is necessary. It might already be a lot of stuff you know already.

Chris,

One little question... When you need to mask a person, do you also use calculations or do you do it by hand?

Thanks!

Andre

Depends.

A while ago I had actions set up for a cmyk workflow that would isolate just the shadows, mids, hilights, quarters, and fleshtones.
Then I would fine tune them for use as is and then combine them into a mostly complete silo mask.
Things work differently with rgb and calculations as they do for the other color spaces. THere is some relearning to do. But it is definitely easier to do in cmyk.
