Why can't get black on mask?

I made a new channel in channel palatte and was painting on it with black at 100% opacity, yet I could not get a 0.0.0 black, more like 18,18,18.
Any ideas why? I could not figure it out.

Equally strange, when I did achieve black using Burn at 100%, which I click on quickmask, that parts I got to black with Burn, were a totally lighter shade that the other pure black parts of the mask. thanks!

Re: Why can't get black on mask?

Did you check the opacity and flow of your brush to make sure they are at 100%. Does the brush you are using have any opacity or color jitter set? Is your brush set to NORMAL mode? (Not the layer blending mode but the mode of the brush in the options bar?)

Re: Why can't get black on mask?

All brush setting were at normal, 100%, so that's what was puzzling. I even tested on a new document, and it was fine, but when I returned to the channel, it would then paint in grey.
