Newbie I've lost a column in my layers palette

Sorry to be such a pest with idiot questions at the moment!

I think I've lost/deactivated a column in the layer's palette. The column next to the visibility /eye column, the one which shows whether you are working on the layer itself, or on a layers mask.

I have no idea what to do to get that column back, and would much appreciate some help.

I use Photoshop CS2.

There are only 2 columns unless you add a mask which makes a third column.

Reading left to right on a layer....

Re: I've lost a column in my layers palette

Many thanks Swampy!

I'm working with one of Katrin Eismann's books at the moment, and she has 4 columns in her illustrations. Must be a different version Photoshop....

Re: I've lost a column in my layers palette

I am using Photoshop CS and have three columns. The first column is the visibility icon (click on or off), the second column looks like the first column (with the small recessed box for each layer) that shows a paperclip for linked layer, a brush for the active layer. This is missing in Swampy's picture above. The third column is the main image column and shows five items: the image icon, layer mask, and vector mask, layer name and the lock status. What you see may depend on the version.

That small box was used to designate the active history layer. Now the active history state layer is selected at the top of the history palette where the "history snapshots" are.
