Removing a recurring pattern

I have a series of photos with a recurring pattern that needs to be removed. It is a screening effect overlaying the image. It is not a repeated pattern like you would get from a scanner. However, the pattern is the same in a series of photographs. Could someone point me towards a thread that might discuss this, or give me some ideas how to handle it?
