stitching maps

I have used the photoshop automate:photomerge with great success when I have sufficient overlap for the software to grab onto. I have some cadastral map images that have a border (collar) around each image, that I would like to combine into a single large map. Unfortunately they do not have any overlap. I have carefully rotated the image to vertical, cropped the borders and attempted to cut and paste them together.

At the bottom of the page, I align the two images and as I move up the image, the seam becomes misaligned. I have seen a trick where I can pick several points on each map that are identical, and then let the software use these points to create the final image. Can anyone see where I am going with this and offer some help?

Re: stitching maps

If you have PS CS4, try putting two images as separate layers in the same document, selct both layers and Edit>Auto Blend Layers. Depending on the image, Panorama my work or sometimes Stack images option works better. You may need to play with your overall canvas size.
