Creating corner slits

I'm trying to create an image where the photo looks like two of the diagonal corners are poked back through slits in the backing cardboard. It seems so simple and I'm sure if I had the wording right, google would provide me with a myriad of tutorials, but I just can't seem to find anything. Could someone please provide some advice or links to tutorials so that I can get this project finished? I would be so grateful!

Hi Almostangelic, Could this be something like you spoke of? It's the final page in a project I was working on.

The woman's figure is on one layer and the circular fan is on the layer underneath. Then, erased through a diagonal slice from each corner. Easy to see once it's in front of you. Have fun! and show us when you've finished.

On a new layer (Shft+Ctrl+N).. Line tool (Shift+U till you get the straight line tool) at appropriate size (I used 20 px for this sample) and same color as backing cardboard.. hold the Shift key when drawing to keep the line @ 45 degrees
Layer style, blending Options to add a drop shadow
Rasterize the layer
new layer paint the small edges the same color as the backing cardboard

OR

you might try making old time corners like in this tutorial.. old time photo corners
