How to create a composite layer?

I would like to create a top layer that combines all the layers in the file. Is this achievable in a quick step process?

Yes, Type Ctrl+Alt+Shift+E. Make sure you are on the top layer.

The function is not on the menus to my knowledge.
One other option that could be done through the menus (slower, but same result) is to do this:
Select > All (cmd/ctrl-a)
Edit > Copy Merged (cmd/ctrl-shift-c)
Edit > Paste (cmd-v)

I am completely stoked for the shortcut keys (I prefer them)- it is just that sometimes I forget, and it is nice to have a visual to remind me at those times.

Yes, there is. Hold down the Alt key and do Layer > Merge Visible.

Hey, I didn't know you could hold down the alt-key while doing that. Neat. Still, not short-cut free, but almost

Another way is if you work in Groups, as well as layers. Create a Group called Composite - and drag a copy (holding Option key) of each of the layers you want to be in the Composite. You could make several Groups of Composites - but when you decide which you want to work on as a single layer - just Select "Merge Group" and it will become a layer.
