Newbie replacing background with textures

what is the best way to replace a background, with textures? should I make a selection first? and how do I erase texture from areas such as the skin and facial areas? any help apreciated.

cs3/ trying to learn.

There are a great many ways to approach the task but a lot depends on the image, the BG, and what the texture is like. It would be best if you attached a sample image for members to provide you with specific suggestions.

If you're only talking about portraits there are times when you want (some of) the texture over the face - usually not the eyes though...

the easiest way to start with texture is to drag the texture layer over your picture and then change the texture layer blending mode to 'overlay'

Another way of removing the texture is to use gaussian blur that way you keep the tones and colours of the texture

( make a selection of where you don't want the texture )
