Green Screen Extraction Technique

Does anyone know of a technique of extracting people off a green screen by duplicating the green channel to create a channel mask.

I attached a screen grab of the channels panel as an example.

I was rummaging through some old files at work and came across this. Apparently it was done by a previous employee.

I am aware of changing the mode to Lab, duplicating the "a" channel and creating a channel mask from the duplicated "a" channel. I am also aware of using the mask panel and using "Color Range" along with "Decontaminate Colors" to create a layer mask.

I tried both of those techniques on this photo and neither of the masks were as good as the mask that was created by duplicating the green channel.

I have tried everything I can think of and I cannot figure out how to change a duplicate of the green channel into a channel mask.

Re: Green Screen Extraction Technique

There are many ways that mask could have been created - manual selections, use of Apply Image command, use of the Calculations command, channel blending, Color Range Selection, Quick Select Tool, and the list goes on. However the choice of an efficient method depends to a large extent on the content of the image. If you can post the actual RGB image, you will likely get a number of good suggestions.

I use a Mac, but I just make a selection of the green channel ( Cmd+click on it , probably Cntrl+click o PC )) and then go back to the layer panel and add a layer mask ( this way the selection wil show directly in the layer mask ).
