How to create an photorealistic alien monster?

I want to create some crazy looking (50s sci-fi movie poster) alien monster which I then add to my photograph. Something like this:

http://rlv.zcache.com/martian_attack...1bfjn0_400.jpg
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_VM9GL4LXfM..._poster_03.jpg
http://lh5.ggpht.com/abramsv/R3GxQ0K...0/ast_3506.jpg
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_WSHXF1H0nT...s400/cover.jpg

I dont want to paint it by hand, I just want to use compositing and create it from different elements and textures (dowload some ball, then add animal texture, wrinkels, eyes). Do you think its possible? How would you do it?

I imagine that creative use of Photoshop's 3D effects/capabilities, along with the warp and puppet tools will help establish a credible look of an alien.

For ideas on manipulating people into alien-esque appearances, consider such places as Worth1000 who has quite a few tutorials on all types of effects one can do, both on people and objects.

Hope that helps you - do post some of your work once completed

That looks nice, but I need to create something less humanoid:

I tried to do a composite of potatoe (with veins texture), crocodile eyes and fish teeths. It could be a good start, but the problem is lighting - usually every element has different lighting.

Post links to the pics and perhaps we can suggest something / have a go at it / work on it as a group?
