I like the look of the black and white. Good job!

I see there is room for adjustment. thanks for showing me that.

Of course they are. The lighting is different enough to drastically alter highlights in texture detail for one. You also never mentioned which you intended to use as the reference when it comes to matching the other. You have virtually no chance of extracting detail from the shadows on the woman, so if you wanted to match her photo to the kid, much of it would be painted in the end due to the sheer amount of stuff that couldn't be compensated via adjustments. There is also the issue of matching color palettes.

That looks like you went somewhat in between with a different combination, and it worked.

Re: combining different lit photos?

I Like your final result

Just for fun I tried a couple multiply layers on just the boy using a gradient mask.. free transformed him to be a bit smaller and rotated some....adjusted colors to come close to moms colors by adding a hue/Sat layer and curves layer... ... combined all the boy fixes into one layer .... then added a layer beneath all working layers with the same color as the moms background and then masked around the boy for the background to show through

Re: combining different lit photos?

Thanks. I think doing it in black and white saved me.
Its the skintone that gives the retouching away in the examples.
